Ensworth Tigers (DII-AA) at Brentwood Academy Eagles (DII-AA)

Friday at 7:00 pm, East/Middle Region

Ensworth (4-2, 1-1) started fast and never looked back in route to a 43-0 shutout against Christ Presbyterian Academy.  Quarterback, Jaylon King, completed 7-10 passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns and ran the ball nine times for 104 yards with a touchdown.  Running back, Nicky Clifton, added 101 yards rushing on 15 carries and a touchdown, while wide receiver, Rodney Owens, hauled in three receptions for 80 yards and two touchdowns.  The Tigers will be multiple on offense with a steady dose of zone read and play a 3-4 on defense.

3 Keys for Ensworth
1. Keep Jeremiah Oatsvall in the pocket; make him beat you as a pocket passer
2. Limit the Eagles rushing attack & make them one-dimensional on offense
3. Win in the trenches up front, establish a running game, & control the clock; limit BA’s possessions

Brentwood Academy
 (4-1, 2-0)
should be well rested coming off a bye week after defeating Baylor 35-0 two weeks ago.  The Eagles were led by quarterback Jeremiah Oatsvall’s three rushing touchdowns, a touchdown through the air, and 183 yards of total offense.  Running back, Tamario Pleasant, added 116 yards rushing on 15 carries and a touchdown. The Eagles game is to have a balanced attack out of their Spread offense and play a disruptive 3-4 defense.

3 Keys for Brentwood Academy
1. Stay balanced on offense; throw a steady mix of run & pass at the Tigers defense & keep them guessing
2. Put eight men in the box & force Ensworth to beat you through the air
3. Win the kicking game

“Coach Speak”
 Forecast:
This is a huge match-up between two of Middle Tennessee’s finest!  This game could decide who is going to compete for the #1 seed and determine playoff seeding, with MBA still looming on both teams schedules.  If you enjoy watching skill players who will be playing on Saturdays, then this is the game for you.  Both teams will trout out multiple, top of the line athletes Friday night.  Ensworth needs to eliminate turnovers, contain Oatsvall in the pocket, and establish their running game to pull the upset.  Brentwood Academy needs to continue to stay balanced on offense, get their playmakers the ball in space, and force Ensworth to beat them throwing the football.  Coming into the season the only question mark about Brentwood Academy’s chance to repeat as State Champions was whether the offensive and defensive lines could rebuild after such heavy losses to graduation.  With the steady improvement of both lines, the addition of Jack Sirmon, and the core nucleus of play-makers shining, I see no reason to pick against the Eagles!

Prediction: Brentwood Academy 28, Ensworth 13

Beech Buccaneers (5A) at Gallatin Green Wave (5A)

Friday at 7:00 pm, Region 6-5A, MyTV30 – WUXP’s Friday Night Rivals Game of the Week

Beech (4-2, 2-1) responded with a 34-7 victory over Springfield after a heart-breaking one point loss to Cane Ridge two weeks ago.  The running back trio of Alex Vanzant (20 carries, 91 yards, 1 TD), Chaz Williamson (15 carries, 128 yards, 1 TD), and Chris Peach (7 carries, 58 yards, 3 TDs) led the Buccaneers offense last Friday night.  The Buccaneers play smash mouth football out of the I-Formation, with a little Wildcat sprinkled in, and line up in a 3-4 on defense.

3 Keys for Beech
1. Find a way to slow down Jordan Mason & force someone else from Gallatin to beat you
2. Continue the ground & pound offense; control the clock & possessions
3. Make a big-play on special teams

Gallatin
 (5-1, 3-0)
used a potent rushing attack and returned two interceptions for touchdowns to defeat Station Camp 34-27.  Running back Jordan Mason led the Green Wave offense with a single game school record 298 yards rushing and three touchdowns.  Dyze Vaughn intercepted a Bison pass in the first quarter and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown, while teammate Marcus DeVault picked off a third quarter pass and took it 75 yards to the house for the Green Wave defense.  Gallatin will feature multiple packages out of the I/Spread formations and show various looks out of the 3-4 defense.

3 Keys for Gallatin
1. Force the Beech offense to play behind the chains & into 3rd & long situations
2. Limit turnovers & costly penalties
3. Win the battle up front; establish Jordan Mason & the running game early

“Coach Speak” Forecast:
All of our old-school, smash-mouth, grind it out football fans are in for a treat Friday night when Beech travels to Gallatin for a Sumner County showdown!  Both teams will feature quality running games, and Gallatin will showcase Jordan Mason, who is chasing after the school’s all-time rushing record.  Not only is this game a big Sumner County rivalry, but this match-up also has massive implications in the Region 6-5A standings.  Both programs need the victory to keep pace with Cane Ridge and avoid falling back into the middle of the pack.  Beech has to find a way to make someone not named Jordan Mason score against them, make a game changing special teams play, and control the clock to have an opportunity to win this ball game.  Gallatin on the flip side needs to establish Jordan Mason early, connect on timely play-action passes, and avoid turnovers that have plagued them in the past.  I went back and forth with this pick, and when in doubt, I always go with the best player on the field.  Gallatin pulls out the victory behind a physical offensive line and the bruising legs of Jordan Mason!

Prediction: Gallatin 28, Beech 27

Watertown Purple Tigers (2A) at Forrest Rockets (2A)

Friday at 7:00 pm, Region 4-2A

Watertown (6-0, 3-0) overcame a slow start and scoreless first half to rout Eagleville 42-21 last Friday night.  Running back, Ty Love, led the Purple Tigers offense with 173 yards rushing on 22 carries and two total touchdowns.  Vonte Bates rushed for one score and caught another touchdown to go along with 84 yards of total offense.  The Purple Tigers feature an up-tempo, no huddle, Spread offense and will look to apply pressure from their 4-2-5 alignment defensively.

3 Keys for Watertown
1. Play with eye discipline on defense & do not look in the backfield against the Wing-T offense
2. Win on 1st & 2nd down defensively; force Forrest to beat you through the air
3. Get off to a fast start offensively & make Forrest uncomfortable on offense

Forrest (6-0, 3-0)
used a dominating first half to cruise to a 43-7 victory over Cascade.  Running back Scrappy Osborne led the Rockets offense with 82 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown.  Slayton Wild added 31 yards on five carries and two touchdowns.  The Rockets defense put together an impressive performance limiting Cascade to 132 yards of total offense. The Rockets will get the ball to a variety of players from their Wing-T offense and play a 3-4 on defense.

3 Keys for Forrest
1. Convert 3rd downs, keep the offense on the field, & control the clock; limit Watertown possessions
2. Limit Ty Love & the Purple Tigers running game; force Watertown to become one-dimensional
3. Win the special teams & turnover battle

“Coach Speak” Forecast:
This is the best under the radar game in Middle Tennessee Friday night with two of the top teams in class 2A squaring off for an inside track to a Region Championship.  Watertown is led by an experienced and hungry senior class that wants to make a name for themselves and their community.  The Purple Tigers need to play with extreme discipline on defense against the well-oiled Wing-T from Forrest, win the battle up front, and get their playmakers the ball in space.  Forrest is led by one of the most under-rated football players in Middle Tennessee in Slayton Wild.  You will see him do a little bit of everything on offense, defense and special teams.  The Rockets have to win the turnover battle, limit Watertown’s possessions, and hit a couple of big plays in the passing game to win this game.  Watertown’s offense is clicking and has too many weapons for Forrest to defend.  The Purple Tigers continue their undefeated journey and quest for a Region Championship in a close victory on the road!

Prediction: Watertown 35, Forrest 31
