Riverdale defensive lineman D’Andre Litaker is the Rutherford Source Defensive Player of the Week for Week 1.

The senior had three tackles for loss, a sack and a safety in Riverdale’s 49-14 win over East Nashville. Litaker’s safety was one of three that the Warriors recorded on Friday.

Litaker’s 2017 season opener was quite a contrast to the one last year. He suffered a season-ending knee injury in Riverdale’s 2016 opener against Ootlewah, a 47-14 victory.

But Litaker worked hard in the offseason and came back strong for 2017. He and defensive teammate Jarek Campbell, a Louisville commitment,  both cracked the list for our top five candidates for Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

Without Litaker last year, the Warriors uncharacteristically struggled to a 6-6 season.

Riverdale (1-0) travels to Franklin on Friday.

It’ll be the first road game, and second out-of-district game, for the Warriors this season.

A bright future ahead for Litaker

Rivals ranks Litaker as the No. 13 player in the Class of 2018 in Tennessee, and No. 180 nationally.

Litaker has verbally committed to play football at Tennessee next fall.
