The Blue Porch, best known for their wonderful cheese spreads, chicken salad, salsa, moonshine cookies, and hot sauces sold at the Main Street Downtown Farmer’s Market, has opened a brick and mortar location where they are offering breakfast and lunch items. The Blue Porch is located at 113 West Lytle Street, across from the Rutherford County Judicial Building.

Of course, the food is not really new. A number of years ago there was a Blue Porch restaurant out in Woodbury in the Art Center and also a bed and breakfast run by mother and son duo Wanda and Aaron Thompson. These are the best of their recipes taken over by current owners of the brand, William and Cynthia Richie. The Richies have added their own spin. Their menu includes stratas, sandwiches, salads, soups, sweets and an assortment of breakfast foods.

Let’s start out with the cheese spreads. They make pimento cheese, roasted pepper, and smoked gouda bacon cheese spreads, which they are now serving in their restaurant. Nothing like a melted pimento cheese spread sandwich and some of their loaded baked potato soup on a cold day. Or some of the smoked gouda melted on a baked potato. Smoked pepper tastes great with pulled pork.

The classic chicken salad is juicy and delicious with just the right blend of flavors perfect for a sandwich, on a salad, or served open faced with one of their cheese spreads melted over the top. Besides the original flavor, there is now pesto or chipotle.

Offering salads daily, they include the “Legal Aid” salad with grilled chicken, goat cheese, pecans, dried cranberries, and Balsamic vinaigrette over mixed greens; the Cobb Salad or the Chef Salad. They have also started making a Caesar with their own flair. And they always have their well-known pasta salad to grab and go. It is made from tri-colored spiral noodles, feta, sundried tomatoes, broccoli and black olives.

Sandwiches on the menu are named after famous judges from television. They include the “Harry Stone” made with their Gouda Bacon cheese spread, Marcy Jam’s Tiki Torch Jam, and Virginia ham; the “Judge Judy” made from whipped pesto feta, spinach, avocado, red onion and cucumber with turkey added for meat eaters; and the “Wapner Crunch Wrap” made with bologna smoked with hickory chips and expresso rub, their pimento cheese, relish and grain mustard wrapped up in a tortilla and thrown on the griddle.

Lots of daily specials are available on top of the regular menu, like a recent Taco Tuesday Mexican Quiche bubbling with queso, chorizo and caramelized onions. Another is their quiche squared made with ham from The Hamery. They also have potato Fridays where baked potatoes are filled with lots of tasty things.

Their Breakfast Stratas include gouda bacon; spinach, feta and sundried tomatoes; and French toast. They have also played with Apple Pecan French Toast Strata.

An assortment of sweet treats can be found at The Bleu Porch. Dark Moonshine are chocolate chip cookies made with Short Mountain shine. They also offer a pecan and cranberry moonshine cookie. Other goodies they have at different times include strawberry cupcakes, snickerdoodles, peanut butter and jelly bars, berry muffins, chocolate ganache brownie cupcakes, pink lemonade brownies, carrot cake cupcakes and pumpkin cheesecake dip.
