On Thursday, February 9, 2017, the Murfreesboro City Council approved MPD Chief of Police Karl Durr’s request to create the positions of Communications Manager and Finance Manager for the Murfreesboro Police Department.

The Communications Manager will oversee the Police and Fire Communications Center which includes 911, police dispatch, fire dispatch, and first responder communications. “What is commonly referred to as police & fire communications is in reality a fully functioning enhanced 911 center for our city,” Durr stated. “The Public Safety Answering Point interacts with the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and other criminal justice databases, dispatches over 100,000 calls for service annually, and provides fire and first responder support to the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department.” The position will oversee dispatch center supervisors to ensure communication services are being adequately and sufficiently provided, including emergency medical dispatch. The manager will work with the Rutherford County 911 Board in mapping and equipment/information technology issues.

The Finance Manager will direct, manage and coordinate financial activities of the MPD. This person will assist in the preparation of the annual budget and monitor spending throughout the year. “We are appreciative of the City Council’s support of these positions and look forward to realizing tremendous benefits from this opportunity,” Durr concluded. Both positions are expected to be formally posted next week at www.murfreesborotn.gov
