Taylor Black worked for Reeves-Sain Pharmacy beginning in high school. It is working there that ignited his desire to become a pharmacist, which brought him to open Blackâs Apothecary across the street from his former employer, in the strip mall behind McAlisterâs on Memorial Boulevard in Murfreesboro. Black’s Apothecary officially opened November 5, 2019.
âI loved seeing the compassion that [Shane Reeves and Rick Sain] had for the community. It made me want to go to pharmacy school. I opened this pharmacy to fill the hole I felt was left by the closing of Reeve-Sain for a community pharmacy. One that would offer curbside service, delivery if homebound, and small-town service.â
Due to new laws, they will not be able to do compounding, as that now requires a sterile room and special venting, but they can do just about everything else that Reeves-Sain did, except have a post office and make the famous milkshakes. They certainly provide the friendly, âyou are part of the familyâ atmosphere that was always found at Reeveâs-Sain.
âWe even work with Shane Reeveâs business, 12 Stone,â said Black. âWe have provided their Medi-Pack customers with medicines for acute conditions, like a five-day supply of antibiotics. Also, they gave up their medical supply department to put in their infusion suites, so I have supplied some of their customers with items like walkers, crutches, nebulizers, and other durable medical products.â
One of the other things that Black is willing to do is special orders of over the counter medicines, like for the customer who came asking for Creoimulsion Cough Syrup, that she couldnât find anywhere else. They now carry a small supply in-house.
Black has also put a focus on chemical-free items like those made by Herb+Leaf. They make items like chemical-free face bars, Epsom salts, chapsticks, and elderberry syrup which is a strong anti-viral and anti-bacterial. It also includes locally made honey.
Other locally made items they carry include a nail polish that is vegan, cruelty-free and paraben-free, made under the JUWAN label. Handmade jewelry, made by an artist in Collierville, is also available. But their biggest seller is MTSUâs famous chocolate milk, which they sell by the pint and the gallon.
A small section of baby items is also available, including knit clothing, and childrenâs book kits for the tooth fairy and tickle monster. Their hottest seller is a kit to make a print of a newbornâs foot on a special canvas made by Green Birdie.
The Apothecary just got their ability to accept insurance passed by the state, and they hope to have a ribbon cutting in the near future. And one day, they just might be able to provide those wonderful shakes.
