Several town of Smyrna employees volunteered their time last week to help build a house for Habitat for Humanity. Meet Amy and her children who will soon be moving into the house.

Amy is a native of Rutherford County and grew up in a small family. She currently works as a Rehab Assistant in a Garden Center.

Amy and her children have lived in Smyrna for the past several years; however they have never had a stable place to call home. They have lived in various apartments with the most current one leaving them overcrowded and cost burden. After speaking with a friend who is a Habitat homeowner and getting encouragement from her mother, Amy decided to apply to the Habitat program. She was very excited when she found out she was accepted and her children cried when they were able to choose a lot in Smyrna. “It was important to us that we get to stay near our friends,” Amy’s daughter replied.

The Habitat program has been a true blessing for Amy. She has enjoyed meeting the other future homeowners and walking this journey alongside them. This experience is not only helping her provide stability for her family but it is also helping her become a stronger,
self-reliant homeowner.

It is easy to take for granted the luxuries that owning a home allow a family. For as long as Amy can remember, she has been told what she can and cannot do within her four walls and has had to hear everyone else around her living their lives. Amy is looking forward to less noise, a stress free environment, and more freedom to do the things their family enjoys. She loves agriculture and is excited to plant flowers as well have a garden. Her children are most excited about each having a room of their own, having the opportunity to invite friends over for the first time, and being able to walk to the library and park.

Amy and her children would like to thank Hooper Family, Publix Super Markets Charities, Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati, Pinnacle Bank, THDA, United Way, and everyone else who made her build possible through donation of their time, talents, and treasures.
