Three Rutherford County Adult Detention Center deputies have been recognized for finding illegal drugs and other contraband hidden inside an inmate housing unit.
Sgt. Jacob Hibdon, Field Training Officer Tyler Al-Greene and Deputy Geoffrey Boyd received Meritorious Conduct Awards for their work in removing the drugs from the jail.
According to Lt. Glen Edgell’s award nomination, Narcotics Detective George Barrett alerted Hibdon that an inmate was believed to have Suboxone strips, a medication used to treat opioid dependence.
Hibdon developed a plan to safely remove two inmates from the housing pod, secure their cell and place the unit on lockdown. The two inmates were taken to booking, where they were drug tested and strip searched. Both tested positive for Suboxone.
Hibdon, Al-Greene and Boyd then searched the cell and found 21 Suboxone strips, 16 pills and other contraband. The Suboxone strips were hidden inside the fingertips of rubber gloves and in a Bible.
The recovered items were turned over to Detective Barrett, and criminal charges were filed.
Edgell praised the deputies for their work, saying Hibdon’s leadership and professionalism helped lead to the recovery of the drugs, while Al-Greene and Boyd’s careful searching may have prevented an overdose or possible death inside the jail.
