If you like burgers and beer, Jack Brown’s Beer and Burger Joint should be on your must-visit list. Jack Brown’s has won the Battle of the Burger, and Ruthie Awards for the best burger and the best beer selection. The full house on a recent night I visited with some friends was a testament to the popularity of the restaurant. A place that serves only burgers, with the exception of a grilled cheese sandwich for kids.

What makes the burgers so good? Wagyu beef. Wagyu is Japanese beef. It was developed to have greater marbling and has a 35,000-year-old history. This selective breeding has created a unique flavor and tenderness.

Their first prize-winning burger was the Cobra Kai. It is topped with cream cheese, pickled jalapenos, and jalapeno jelly. For their second win, they entered the El Chupacabra, which is topped with sweet-chili sauce, goat cheese, and special toppings.

Other specialty burgers are on the menu, as are burgers created for every day of the week. Their top daily specialty burger is The Ponch, served on Friday. Inspired by the state of California, it is topped with house-made guacamole, applewood smoked bacon, white cheddar cheese, and Siriacha mayo. I tried it as a grilled cheese, minus the burger, and it was amazing!

“Our Saturday option is called “The Freestyle,” said Dallas Bradley, who runs the Notch Club, their beer club. “It changes every Saturday based on what is in the Farmer’s Market.”

While they make great burgers, there was more discussion at our table about the fries. Some were willing to share, others said “no way.” They make both regular and sweet potato fries.

“We are also all about craft beers,” said Bradley. “Those who complete tasting 100 of them get a free “Notch Club” button-down shirt, and the chance to go on field trips to do tastings as a group. Our goal is to bring people together doing things they enjoy.”

In spite of the definite bar atmosphere, on my visit the diners were a mixture of people — from young families to groups of seniors. There was even a group in front with a dog lounging under the table.

Jack Brown’s Beer and Burger Bar keeps the grill open until 1:30 a.m. every day, and they are open until 2:00 a.m.

And they will be back again this year for the Battle of the Burgers, which will take place on September 12!

As a final note, be sure to save room for a deep-fried Oreo for dessert.

  1. A burger is not a burger without a tomato and they have ZERO burgers with a tomato. #1, that’s a laugh.
