A candidate for the Rutherford County Commission is facing a misdemeanor theft charge after Murfreesboro police investigated the alleged theft of an opponent’s campaign sign, according to WSMV.
Romel McMurry turned himself in Tuesday at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center after a Murfreesboro police detective obtained a warrant charging him with theft under $1,000.
The investigation began July 15 when fellow county commission candidate Pat Clements reported that one of his campaign signs had been taken. According to police, the sign contained a hidden AirTag that helped investigators track its location.
Clements also said several of his campaign signs had disappeared from different locations and asked anyone with information about additional incidents to contact him.
According to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, McMurry was booked and later released on his own recognizance.
McMurry is scheduled to appear in Rutherford County General Sessions Court on Aug. 24.
