Daniel Toner Cox, 82, of Fostoria, Kansas, passed away at his home on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. He was a long-time respected resident of the area.

Dan was born on March 27, 1944, in Muncie, Indiana, the son of William T. and Marjorie Alice (Coulter) Cox. He attended Central High School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and then served in the United State Army. Dan was a career soldier and was stationed in a variety of locations including Japan, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, and Germany. After 20 years of military service, he had achieved the rank of Master Sargeant at the time of his retirement.

Following a distinguished military career, Dan attended school for printing and graphic arts and worked for Parker Hannifin Corporation for several years. He then attended the Police Academy and served as a deputy in Riley and Pottawatomie Counties, and was a Federal Police Officer for twelve years at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Topeka. Dan was very proud of his conservative values, American patriotism and his contributions during his military service to this country.

Dan enjoyed driving and buying cars, and especially loved racing VWs and Corvettes throughout his life. He liked to travel to visit his family, and enjoyed the history of the many places that he was stationed. He was member of the Fostoria Baptist Church. Dan will be remembered for his dry sense of humor, kind nature, strong leadership for his family, and always willing to help those around him.

Dan married Shirley Weeks on June 21, 1966, in Miami, Oklahoma. For sixty years, they raised their family and shared their lives together through anything life brought them. For almost 20 years Dan and Shirley served as foster parents providing a home for more than fifty children of all ages.

Dan is survived by his wife, Shirley and his children Annette Stueve (Ronnie) of Fostoria, Shane Cox (Julie) of Afton, Oklahoma, and Starla Bocanegra of Dallas, Texas; his grandchildren Jared Cox (Tiffany) of Westmoreland, Carissa Miller (Gabe) of Junction City, Dustin Stueve (Ramsey) of Fostoria, Dalton Stueve (Sierra) of Fostoria, Emily Mounsey (Lou) of Paris France, Will Cox of Tulsa, Ok, Isaac Bocanegra (Serena) of Dallas, Texas, and Austin Bocanegra of Austin, Texas; his great-grandchildren Kanon, Donnie, Lane, Wyatt, Cameron, Parker, Oaklynn, Laynie, Kohen, Jaxon, and Jacob. He is also survived by his siblings; Roger Cox (Diane) of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Mark Cox (Judy) of Shelbyville, Tennessee; his brother-in-law, Wallace Montgomery of Valdosta, Georgia; and his sister-in-law, Dee Cox of Shelbyville, Tennessee. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, his sons: Douglas E. Cox and David L. Cox, and his siblings Frank H. Cox and wife Doris, Alice L. Montgomery, and William T. Cox, Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday August 1, 2026, at Campanella and Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego. Pastor Dave VanBebber will be officiating. Burial will follow in Antioch Cemetery, southwest of Frankfort, Kansas. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Friday, July 31, 2026. A family reception will be held at the Community Center in Westmoreland after the burial. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Daniel T. Cox Memorial Fund at Union State Bank in Olsburg, KS.
