A man received minor burns to his hands and foot while trying to put out a fire on his back porch with a fire extinguisher overnight.

MFRD firefighters responded to the fire on Lafave Lane just before 1 a.m. Sat , Nov. 11.

The man, his wife, and child were at home at the time. The man had been grilling earlier Friday evening and last checked on the grill around 10 p.m., according to a fire supervisor. The family was awaken by the smell of smoke. The wife and child were not hurt. The man was evaluated on scene by Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services personnel and did not have to go to the hospital.

Since the man was injured, investigators with the Fire Marshal’s Office were called to the scene to investigate.

“There is still a city-county burn ban in effect,” said Assistant Fire Marshal Shan Womack. “All outdoor burning is prohibited, including grilling and using fire pits, until weather conditions are favorable.”
