Betty Ann Richardson, age 77, of Winchester, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on August 10, 1948, in Cookeville, Tennessee, Betty was the daughter of the late Charlie and Alpha Carmack. She was raised in Cookeville and graduated from Tennessee Tech University, where she met the love of her life, Jerry Lee Richardson. The two were married in 1971 and made their home in Winchester, where they built a life centered on faith, family, and service to others. She later received her master’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University. Betty and Jerry shared fifty-one wonderful years of marriage before Jerry’s passing in 2022.
Betty found her calling in education and devoted thirty-six years to teaching English at North Junior High School. She believed in the power of learning and loved helping her students discover an appreciation for literature, language, and the written word. Her classroom was a place of encouragement, compassion, and high expectations, and the influence she had on generations of students will be remembered for years to come.
A faithful member of Winchester First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Betty loved the Lord and lived out her faith through kindness, service, and fellowship. One of her greatest joys was singing in the church choir and especially the Easter and Christmas cantatas where she worshipped alongside her church family for over 50 years.
While Betty touched countless lives as a teacher, her greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted mother, and nothing brought her more happiness than being “Mimi.” She treasured every moment spent with her grandchildren, celebrating their accomplishments, making memories, and surrounding them with unconditional love. Her family was the center of her world.
Betty also found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved cooking and especially baking delicious homemade desserts. Her famous fudge and Christmas sugar cookies became a family tradition and a favorite that everyone looked forward to. She also had a lifelong love for Elvis, whose music never failed to bring a smile to her face. Whether gathered around the dinner table, baking something sweet, singing in church, or simply enjoying time with family and friends, Betty had a gift for making everyone feel welcomed, loved, and at home.
Betty’s legacy is one of faith, love, hospitality, and service. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished Mimi, faithful teacher, and loyal friend whose kindness and compassion left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
In addition to her husband, Jerry Lee Richardson, Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Alpha Carmack, and her brother, Odell Carmack.
She is survived by her twin daughters, Andrea (Ty) Broadbent of Winchester and Angela (Jared) Woodall of Decherd; her beloved grandchildren, Caleb and Caitlyn Cashion, and Brooklyn and Brandon Woodall; her bonus grandchildren, Tyler (Lynsey), Rachael, Austin, Brittany, and Blake Broadbent; bonus great grandchild Ellie Mae Broadbent, her brothers, James Carmack, Glynn Carmack, and her twin brother, Bobby Carmack; her sisters-in-law Barbara Wilkerson, Katherine Johnson and Lou Ann Richardson, brother-in-law Jackie (Dianne) Richardson as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Visitation will be from 11am-1pm on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. Funeral Services will follow at 1:00 pm in the Chapel of Moore-Cortner Funeral Home with Dr. Rev. Michael Clark officiating. Interment will be at Franklin Memorial Gardens.
