La Vergne Vice Mayor Brown Presented Distinguished Alumni Award

Newly-appointed La Vergne Vice Mayor Melisa Brown was honored at the Motlow College Foundation’s annual Motlow Fire and Ice Gala.

The Motlow College Foundation, which organizes the fundraiser, selected Brown to receive this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award. Brown was presented with the award by the President of Motlow College, Michael Torrence. Mayor Jason Cole said, “this recognition shows heart and dedication to the community and to the academics.”

In 2016, the Motlow College Foundation decided it wanted to create an award that would celebrate and recognize great achievements of the college’s alumni within their profession and the community. These alumni “bring prestige to the Motlow community” and friends and staff of Motlow State Community College are honored to have “created the opportunity that propelled these individuals forward at important points in their lives by supporting education.”

“Making the decision to attend Motlow State Community College was a defining moment in my life,” said Vice Mayor Brown. “Motlow has not just changed my life, but that of my family’s and the city that I am proud to represent.”

“We are thrilled to be able to present this Distinguished Alumni Award to Melisa,” said Lane Yoder, Executive Director of Motlow College Foundation. “Melisa is a fantastic and shining example of how getting an education can be empowering and can change the direction of a person’s life. We are so proud to call her, not only an alum of Motlow, but a friend of Motlow.”

Money raised at the Gala fundraiser goes toward helping students with scholarships, tuition, fees and books.
