Nine to Join the TSSAA Hall of Fame

The 2019 TSSAA Hall of Fame inductees have been selected. Nine new members will be inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame at the annual luncheon at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center in Murfreesboro on Saturday, April 13, 2019.

Two administrators, five coaches, one official, and one contributor will be inducted that day to join others in the annual gathering of those selected since the process began in 1982.

Those being inducted at this year’s luncheon are: Jim Barr, administrator from Nashville; Ike White, administrator from Memphis; Tommy Colvin, coach from Humboldt, Joe George, coach from Lewisburg; Mickey Marley, coach from Jackson; Hubie Smith, coach from Nashville; Tom Weathers, coach from Chattanooga;

C. A. Dockins, official from Cleveland; and Ed “Jabbo” Hessey, contributor from Nashville.

The Hall of Fame luncheon will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 13. The luncheon is to not only honor the new inductees and their families, but to honor all past inductees into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. Tickets will go on sale on Monday, February 4. You may purchase the tickets at $35.00 each by visiting our website (www.tssaa.org). Please print off the ticket form and mail it to our office along with a check or money order. All ticket orders will be available for pick-up on the day of the luncheon. There will be NO ticket sales at the door.

Jim Barr—Official, coach, and administrator in the Metro Nashville area for 49 yearsâ€Ĥofficiated basketball, baseball, softball, and track and fieldâ€Ĥfounder and director of the Doug Hall Relays in Nashville and has served as an official at the TSSAA State Track meet since 1981â€Ĥhas coached football, boys track, basketball, cross country, and bowlingâ€Ĥas Athletic Director he served as director for numerous District, Region, and Sub-state games while at Hillwood and Martin Luther King high schoolsâ€ĤTIAAA Athletic Director of the Year and TSSAA Distinguished Service Award in 1996â€Ĥreceived the TSSAA A. F. Bridges Award in the “officials” category for the 2016-17 school yearâ€Ĥretired in 2010 but continues to serve in Athletic Administration at MLK Academic Magnet High School and helps coach the MLK middle school boys’ basketball team

Ike White—Coached football, basketball, track, baseball, golf, and wrestling during his 25-year coaching careerâ€Ĥhead football coach at Fairley High School in Memphis for 23 yearsâ€ĤAthletic Director and Assistant Principal for 9 years at Fairleyâ€ĤPrincipal at Hamilton High School for 4 years and Westwood High School for 5 yearsâ€Ĥhis schools had several state championships under his tenure as an administratorâ€Ĥmember of the TSSAA Board of Control from 2006 until his retirement in 2015

Tommy Colvin—Girls basketball coach for over 40 years in West Tennesseeâ€Ĥmajority of coaching took place at Humboldt High Schoolâ€Ĥstints at University School of Jackson, Trenton Peabody, and Crockett Co. high schoolsâ€Ĥhis teams made 7 TSSAA State tournament appearancesâ€ĤState Runner-up in 2004 (Peabody)â€ĤTSSAA State Champions in 1979 (last year of 6 on 6) and 1985 with Humboldtâ€Ĥcoached in over 900 high school gamesâ€Ĥcurrently serves as an Assistant Principal and Assistant girls’ basketball coach at Crockett Co. High School

Joe George—Head baseball and Assistant football coach at Marshall Co. High School for close to 40 yearsâ€Ĥcompiled 803 wins and only 262 losses in baseball and made 12 trips to the TSSAA State tournamentâ€Ĥ4 teams finished as state runner-upâ€Ĥwon 3 TSSAA State Baseball Championships (1983, 1993, 1994) â€Ĥas Defensive Coordinator of the football team the Tigers won the State Championship in 1984â€Ĥinducted into the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fameâ€Ĥretired in May of 2009

Mickey Marley—Head football coach at the University School of Jackson for 27 years…became the head coach at USJ, along with Dean of Students, in 1989 and also served as Athletic Director from 1994 until 2002â€Ĥhis teams made five trips to the State Championship game, 10 state semi-final appearances, and 15 quarterfinal games â€Ĥreceived numerous coach of the year honors and was inducted into the Jackson/Madison Co. Sports Hall of Fame, the Franklin High School Sports Hall of Fame, and the Tennessee Football Coaches Association Hall of Fameâ€Ĥcompleted his career at USJ in 2015 with 245 wins and 91 lossesâ€Ĥcurrently the head football coach at Rosenwald Middle School in Trenton

Hubie Smith—Boys’ and girls’ basketball coach for nearly 40 yearsâ€Ĥ19 years as head coach at Bartlett High School in Memphis and won the 2001 TSSAA State Championship in class AAAâ€Ĥassisted at both Belmont and Lipscomb University in Nashville before heading to Ensworth High School as the head girls’ basketball coachâ€Ĥwon over 100 games at Ensworth and captured 2 State Championships (2010, 2013)â€Ĥbecame head boys’ basketball coach at Brentwood Academy in 2013â€Ĥhas won 4 consecutive TSSAA State Titles (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018) and is only the 3rd boys’ basketball coach in Tennessee to accomplish such a featâ€Ĥhas almost 700 career victoriesâ€Ĥhas received numerous District, Regional, and State Coach of the Year honors, including the 2018 Tennessean Coach of the Year

Tom Weathers—Longtime football coach at Red Bank High School in Chattanoogaâ€Ĥserved as assistant coach at 5 different schools before landing at Red Bank in 1973â€Ĥin 29 years as head coach at Red Bank he won 222 games while only losing 85â€Ĥleft Red Bank in 2002 and went to GA for 2 years and then finished his career at Soddy Daisy High School from 2004 – 2007â€Ĥwon the TSSAA Class 5A State Championship at Red Bank in 2000 with a 15-0 recordâ€Ĥnumerous Coach of the Year honors including TN Titans, TSSAA, and TACAâ€Ĥmember of the Greater Chattanooga Sports, Chattanooga Old Timers, U. T. Chattanooga Athletics, and Tennessee Football Coaches Association halls of fameâ€Ĥfield at Red Bank High School is named in his honorâ€Ĥreceived TSSAA Distinguished Service Award in 1988

C. A. Dockins— Official from Cleveland, TN who worked for over 50 years as a high school and middle school officialâ€Ĥ member of the Athens Officials Association since 1962 and served as supervisor and assigner since 1984â€Ĥworked the 1984 TSSAA State Basketball Championshipsâ€Ĥofficiated in numerous District, Regional, and Sub-state gamesâ€Ĥheld various basketball clinics for officials in East Tennesseeâ€Ĥhas officiated and supervised at the college levelâ€Ĥcontinues to supervise officials for the TSSAA today

Jabbo Hessey—Longtime teacher and coach in the Nashville areaâ€Ĥbegan teaching and coaching at Oak Hill in 1970 and was also the school’s athletic directorâ€Ĥcoached football, basketball, track, and golf at Brentwood Academy from 1986 until 1990 and again in 2006â€Ĥtaught Science and Physical Education and served as the middle school Athletic Director at Battle Ground Academy from 1990 until 2005â€Ĥwas the golf and track coach at Ensworth High School during the 2005-2006 school yearâ€Ĥbecame a TSSAA track official in 1970â€Ĥhas served as a Referee / Assistant Starter at various TSSAA track and field meetsâ€Ĥofficiated the TSSAA track and field state championships for 48 yearsâ€Ĥserved as the Director of the TSSAA State Track Meet for 11 yearsâ€Ĥretired after the 2016 state track meet.
