The 2019 TSSAA Hall of Fame inductees have been selected. Nine new members will be inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame at the annual luncheon at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center in Murfreesboro on Saturday, April 13, 2019.
Two administrators, five coaches, one official, and one contributor will be inducted that day to join others in the annual gathering of those selected since the process began in 1982.
Those being inducted at this yearâs luncheon are: Jim Barr, administrator from Nashville; Ike White, administrator from Memphis; Tommy Colvin, coach from Humboldt, Joe George, coach from Lewisburg; Mickey Marley, coach from Jackson; Hubie Smith, coach from Nashville; Tom Weathers, coach from Chattanooga;
C. A. Dockins, official from Cleveland; and Ed âJabboâ Hessey, contributor from Nashville.
The Hall of Fame luncheon will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 13. The luncheon is to not only honor the new inductees and their families, but to honor all past inductees into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. Tickets will go on sale on Monday, February 4. You may purchase the tickets at $35.00 each by visiting our website (www.tssaa.org). Please print off the ticket form and mail it to our office along with a check or money order. All ticket orders will be available for pick-up on the day of the luncheon. There will be NO ticket sales at the door.
Jim BarrâOfficial, coach, and administrator in the Metro Nashville area for 49 yearsâĤofficiated basketball, baseball, softball, and track and fieldâĤfounder and director of the Doug Hall Relays in Nashville and has served as an official at the TSSAA State Track meet since 1981âĤhas coached football, boys track, basketball, cross country, and bowlingâĤas Athletic Director he served as director for numerous District, Region, and Sub-state games while at Hillwood and Martin Luther King high schoolsâĤTIAAA Athletic Director of the Year and TSSAA Distinguished Service Award in 1996âĤreceived the TSSAA A. F. Bridges Award in the âofficialsâ category for the 2016-17 school yearâĤretired in 2010 but continues to serve in Athletic Administration at MLK Academic Magnet High School and helps coach the MLK middle school boysâ basketball team
Ike WhiteâCoached football, basketball, track, baseball, golf, and wrestling during his 25-year coaching careerâĤhead football coach at Fairley High School in Memphis for 23 yearsâĤAthletic Director and Assistant Principal for 9 years at FairleyâĤPrincipal at Hamilton High School for 4 years and Westwood High School for 5 yearsâĤhis schools had several state championships under his tenure as an administratorâĤmember of the TSSAA Board of Control from 2006 until his retirement in 2015
Tommy ColvinâGirls basketball coach for over 40 years in West TennesseeâĤmajority of coaching took place at Humboldt High SchoolâĤstints at University School of Jackson, Trenton Peabody, and Crockett Co. high schoolsâĤhis teams made 7 TSSAA State tournament appearancesâĤState Runner-up in 2004 (Peabody)âĤTSSAA State Champions in 1979 (last year of 6 on 6) and 1985 with HumboldtâĤcoached in over 900 high school gamesâĤcurrently serves as an Assistant Principal and Assistant girlsâ basketball coach at Crockett Co. High School
Joe GeorgeâHead baseball and Assistant football coach at Marshall Co. High School for close to 40 yearsâĤcompiled 803 wins and only 262 losses in baseball and made 12 trips to the TSSAA State tournamentâĤ4 teams finished as state runner-upâĤwon 3 TSSAA State Baseball Championships (1983, 1993, 1994) âĤas Defensive Coordinator of the football team the Tigers won the State Championship in 1984âĤinducted into the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Hall of FameâĤretired in May of 2009
Mickey MarleyâHead football coach at the University School of Jackson for 27 years…became the head coach at USJ, along with Dean of Students, in 1989 and also served as Athletic Director from 1994 until 2002âĤhis teams made five trips to the State Championship game, 10 state semi-final appearances, and 15 quarterfinal games âĤreceived numerous coach of the year honors and was inducted into the Jackson/Madison Co. Sports Hall of Fame, the Franklin High School Sports Hall of Fame, and the Tennessee Football Coaches Association Hall of FameâĤcompleted his career at USJ in 2015 with 245 wins and 91 lossesâĤcurrently the head football coach at Rosenwald Middle School in Trenton
Hubie SmithâBoysâ and girlsâ basketball coach for nearly 40 yearsâĤ19 years as head coach at Bartlett High School in Memphis and won the 2001 TSSAA State Championship in class AAAâĤassisted at both Belmont and Lipscomb University in Nashville before heading to Ensworth High School as the head girlsâ basketball coachâĤwon over 100 games at Ensworth and captured 2 State Championships (2010, 2013)âĤbecame head boysâ basketball coach at Brentwood Academy in 2013âĤhas won 4 consecutive TSSAA State Titles (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018) and is only the 3rd boysâ basketball coach in Tennessee to accomplish such a featâĤhas almost 700 career victoriesâĤhas received numerous District, Regional, and State Coach of the Year honors, including the 2018 Tennessean Coach of the Year
Tom WeathersâLongtime football coach at Red Bank High School in ChattanoogaâĤserved as assistant coach at 5 different schools before landing at Red Bank in 1973âĤin 29 years as head coach at Red Bank he won 222 games while only losing 85âĤleft Red Bank in 2002 and went to GA for 2 years and then finished his career at Soddy Daisy High School from 2004 â 2007âĤwon the TSSAA Class 5A State Championship at Red Bank in 2000 with a 15-0 recordâĤnumerous Coach of the Year honors including TN Titans, TSSAA, and TACAâĤmember of the Greater Chattanooga Sports, Chattanooga Old Timers, U. T. Chattanooga Athletics, and Tennessee Football Coaches Association halls of fameâĤfield at Red Bank High School is named in his honorâĤreceived TSSAA Distinguished Service Award in 1988
C. A. Dockinsâ Official from Cleveland, TN who worked for over 50 years as a high school and middle school officialâĤ member of the Athens Officials Association since 1962 and served as supervisor and assigner since 1984âĤworked the 1984 TSSAA State Basketball ChampionshipsâĤofficiated in numerous District, Regional, and Sub-state gamesâĤheld various basketball clinics for officials in East TennesseeâĤhas officiated and supervised at the college levelâĤcontinues to supervise officials for the TSSAA today
Jabbo HesseyâLongtime teacher and coach in the Nashville areaâĤbegan teaching and coaching at Oak Hill in 1970 and was also the schoolâs athletic directorâĤcoached football, basketball, track, and golf at Brentwood Academy from 1986 until 1990 and again in 2006âĤtaught Science and Physical Education and served as the middle school Athletic Director at Battle Ground Academy from 1990 until 2005âĤwas the golf and track coach at Ensworth High School during the 2005-2006 school yearâĤbecame a TSSAA track official in 1970âĤhas served as a Referee / Assistant Starter at various TSSAA track and field meetsâĤofficiated the TSSAA track and field state championships for 48 yearsâĤserved as the Director of the TSSAA State Track Meet for 11 yearsâĤretired after the 2016 state track meet.
