Murfreesboro City Schools will host a new parent welcome event on Thursday, August 4, from 2-5 p.m. in the cafeteria at Patterson Park Community Center. This welcome party is designed for parents of students new to MCS entering grades one through six.

“Entering a new school district is a big transition for students and parents,” says Greg Lyles, Director of Community Outreach. “The change can be relatively smooth for many families but can be a significant barrier for others. This welcome event is designed to help families begin the school year with the tools they need to have a great year.”

From social support interventions to after school care, the MCS district staff will be highlighting the parent and student support areas that are available throughout the district. This welcome exchange is in addition to individual school open houses and tours and allows parents the opportunity to meet the district staff and receive additional information regarding their child’s education.

“Unlike a school open house, the district welcome event is designed for parents to be exposed to programs offered throughout our district including school nutrition, special education, gifted services, transportation and much more,” says Lisa Trail, Director of Communication.

New parents are encouraged to come prepared with questions. Representatives from school nursing, coordinated school health, gifted, special education, curriculum, transportation, outreach, student registration, technology, nutrition, after school care and more will be available. Parents will also be offered the opportunity to register for parent portal and other communication tools utilized by Murfreesboro City Schools.

Although this event is designed for parents of first through sixth grade students transitioning to Murfreesboro City Schools, parents of kindergarten and preschool students are welcome to attend.
“There has been over three thousand new residential units created in Murfreesboro since 2015. With that number in mind, MCS expects hundreds of new families to begin the school year in 2016-17. It is essential that we create a school climate where students and families want to be involved,” says Gary Anderson, Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Support Services.

The new school year begins with a half day for students in grades one through six on Wednesday, August 3 and the first full day on Monday, August 8. Preschool and Kindergarten will begin with a phase-in calendar. The welcome party for parents is Thursday, August 4.
Murfreesboro City Schools is district of twelve schools, focused on preschool through sixth grade, committed to the academic and personal success for each child. Over 8,700 students are expected to attend a Murfreesboro City School during the 2016-17 school year. For additional information, please visit www.cityschools.net.
