It’s time to talk turkey. With only a few weeks left until Thanksgiving, there’s no time to waste if you’re thinking about adding a local turkey to your table.

Many local farmers take reservations for their big birds and supplies are limited, so the sooner you make contact, the better.

“We’re getting loads of reservations right now as we near the holidays,” Karen Overton, farmer of Wedge Oak Farm near Lebanon, said. “If you’re looking for a locally-grown, pasture-raised turkey, you best get your order in soon.”

“We’re very excited about our turkey flock, which includes several heritage breeds, plus the more typical Broad Breasted Whites. They’ve been quite content roaming the farm and snacking along the way. They love to forage, and they’ll be delicious!”

Some local poultry farmers also raise ducks, chickens and geese. A roasting hen typically weighs about 5 pounds, a pasture raised duck between 4 and 7 pounds, and a free range goose about 8 pounds.

Another place to find your Thanksgiving turkey, Christmas goose, or trendy turducken is a local butcher shop. Local butchers can often order a farm-direct bird for you.
