TDOT Update: Broad & Memorial Interchange; intersection closing scheduled for July 28-31

The past three months have been extremely productive on our project. Bell and their respective subcontractors have substantially completed the northeast ramp, the western bridge abutment, interior bent #2, and the eastern bridge abutment. Then they shifted westbound traffic for SR 96 onto the new northeast ramp, set girders for span #1 on the new bridge, and placed curb and sidewalk between the northwest ramp and the end of the project on the left side of Broad Street. Work was also completed for the storm drainage and the retaining walls.

Next week Bell intends to set the girders for span #3 on the new overpass. This work will be done using rolling roadblocks during the daytime hours, as has been done previously for span #1. This will leave the middle section of the bridge which crosses over Broad Street.
Currently, the contractor plans to close the Broad and Memorial intersection for two weekends between 8 PM on Friday and 6 AM Monday to set the girders for the middle section of the bridge. These closures are tentatively set for the weekends of July 28th thru July 31st and August 4th thru August 7th pending weather conditions. TDOT will distribute a traffic advisory the week of the closures once they have been confirmed.

There will be advanced warning messages up several days before the closure and detour signs posted during the weekend work. Drivers are advised plan ahead and seek alternate routes to access the downtown area while this crucial work is being pursued.

In addition to the bridge work, contractors will also be installing the center portions of the overhead truss signs, placing stone base on the left side of Broad Street and the western bridge abutment, and paving between the northwest ramp and the end of the
project on the left side of Broad Street.

As always, motorists are urged to use caution, reduce speed, and be alert to changing road conditions in the construction zone.
