Charlotte Carkuff was among three middle schoolers to receive awards for their winning submissions in the 2018–19 Dr. Barbara Seniors Harkins Foundation Essay Contest.

Carkuff is a student at Stewarts Creek Middle School.

Essays were submitted by students from throughout the country.

This year’s theme asked students to “imagine you could give advice to someone—it could be someone you know personally, a historical figure or a famous person living today.”

The contest received close to 60 entries from students currently in sixth, seventh or eighth grades. The awards included: 1. Nextbook 7” tablet; 2. $50 gift certificate from Barnes & Noble and 3. $25 for Barnes & Noble.

The panel of more than six judges were comprised of Foundation Board Members and volunteers.

“It was an amazing opportunity to have a chance to read some of the entries,” said Joshua James, a board member who helped judge the contest. “They inspired me and filled me with hope for our young people.”

All winning essays will be posted on the foundation’s website – www.barbaraseniorsharkinsfoundation.org– at a later date.
