Rutherford Weekend: 5 Things to do This Weekend

1. 2019 Boro BBQ and Beer Festivals

WHAT: Family and friends, both old and new can join in the celebration of BBQ at the 6th Annual Boro BBQ Festival on the historic grounds of Cannonsburgh Village in Murfreesboro. Smell that smoke, join in a rib eating contest and watch some of the top cookers in Middle Tennessee compete in the KCBS-sanctioned Dr. George Smith BBQ Brawl. This event annually attracts several thousand visitors to a day of family fun and adventure. Come on down, experience the aroma, and enjoy eating some of the finest BBQ east of the Mississippi River and west of the Great Smoky Mountains. Admission to the event is free.

This annual barbecue cook-off will celebrate the cuisine of fine barbecued Chicken, Pork Ribs, and Anything Butt. Taste all the contestants’ BBQ for $10. Other vendors will also be at the event.

The Boro BBQ BeerFest will feature unlimited 4oz pours of craft beer from BountyBev, Nashville’s only 100% American Craft Distributor. All profits go back into the community to support special projects by the Murfreesboro Breakfast Rotary Club. Tickets for beer fest are $40 and can be bought online or at the doors.

2. 3D Printing Orientation

WHAT: Ready to try a techy craft? Want to learn about 3D printing and not sure where to start? 3D Printing Orientation at the TEC covers the basics of 3D design. Includes best practices, procedure, policies, and overview of the software.

3. Free Day at Oaklands Mansion

WHAT: It’s not often that Oaklands Mansion can offer free admission. Spend your Saturday at the gorgeous mansion for free. Free Day is sponsored in part by J Mullins Jewelry & Gifts LLC.

In Maney Hall, memorabilia from Oaklands’ collection will be on display in celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the museum. The Great Escape: Murfreesboro will be in Oaklands Cottage with a pop-up store offering up music, movies, home goods, and other vintage goodies from the late 1950s to help celebrate this anniversary. They will have vinyl records, vintage movies, glassware, furniture, and so much more. Don’t miss a special performance by the Middle Tennessee Magic Club at the pavilion. Guests are invited to participate in games on the lawn, children’s dress-up, nature walks to the spring and tours of the mansion for FREE.

While enjoying the activities through-out the day, grab a bite to eat from That’s My Dawg, The Holy Smoker and Baker’s Dozen Cookie Company food trucks. Head over to the field at Oaklands Park at 12 noon for some vintage baseball. The Tennessee Association of Vintage Base Ball presents the Maroons versus the Stones River Scouts VBBC in a clash of how baseball used to be.

4. Mother’s Day Brunch at Mayday Brewery

WHAT: Mayday is putting on a special brunch in honor of Mother’s Day this Sunday. Bring your mom or grandmother and join them for a range of options including:

  • Belly, Egg and Cheese Baos. Smoked pork belly, Scrambled eggs and Cheddar cheese.
  • Country Ham bao: smoked country ham, fried egg, spinach and tomato and white gravy.
  • Vegetarian: Spinach, Mushroom, green pepper and onion omelette inside a Bao with Sriracha ailoi.
  • Pan seared seasoned chicken with Bacon, tomato, spinach, and Gouda with spicy remoulade.

They will also have Liege waffles.

5. Yoga at the Island


WHAT: Yoga is a great way to wind down and relax as well as increase flexibility and do low-impact exercise, especially outdoors in nature. Yoga focuses on improving your balance and flexibility, while at the same time reducing stress. Join others in the community on this Saturday at the beautiful Gateway Island. This event is geared for beginner and intermediate levels. Park at the West College Street parking lot, cross the street and walk the trail to the island reception center.
