Dr. Kay Martin has been named the secondary coordinator for Rutherford County Schools effective July 1, announced Richard Zago, the assistant superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.

The secondary coordinator position works with the district’s high schools through the Instruction Department. Martin, a past principal of Walter Hill Elementary School and current assistant principal at Central Magnet School, succeeds Dr. Andrea Anthony. Anthony was recently named the next assistant superintendent for Human Resources and Student Services.

“Kay has a global understanding of all grade bands ranging from kindergarten through 12th grade,” Zago said. “Her experience will greatly benefit the high schools and collaborating with the other grade level coordinators.”

Martin says she is grateful to be given the opportunity and thanked Zago and Director of Schools Don Odom.

“Rutherford County has Tennessee’s best collection of high schools each led by outstanding administrative teams,” Martin said. “I look forward to drawing on my 11 years of administrative experience to assist Rutherford County’s high schools in continuing to provide outstanding educational experiences for our students that will increase their success in high school and their post-secondary careers.”

Martin, a native of Murfreesboro, has been an educator since 1999 when she started as an eighth-grade Language Arts teacher at Walter J. Baird School in Lebanon. She joined Rutherford County Schools in 2002 as a Language Arts teacher at Siegel Middle School and later taught at LaVergne Middle School, where she became an assistant principal in 2006. Martin served as principal at Walter Hill Elementary starting in 2009 and joined Central Magnet School in 2013.

She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree of Science and also received her Master’s in Education from Middle Tennessee State University, where she also played basketball for three years making two NCAA tournament appearances. Martin completed her Doctorate of Education in Leading Organizations and Strategic Change from Lipscomb University in 2016.
