All students are safe, but I want to inform you of a situation that was addressed at Oakland High School this afternoon by the administration and the school resource officer. The school administration is also sending a message directly to its parents to keep them informed and address rumors before they begin.

During a routine check of student parking permits, an administrator discovered a strong smell of marijuana coming from a student’s car. The student was brought to the vehicle and the vehicle was searched. Inside the trunk, they discovered a book bag that contained marijuana and two handguns.

As such, the student (17-year-old male) has been expelled from Oakland under the school district’s zero tolerance policy and has been arrested by the school resource officer.

We know these situations can be frightening for parents and students, but we want to ensure parents know that no threats were made against any students and the school staff followed all safety procedures to resolve the situation. Maintaining safe environments for our students is our top priority.

All media inquiries involving the criminal investigation should be directed to Lisa Marchesoni at the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.
