The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security is partnering with Linebaugh Public Library to provide a Driver’s License Renewal Kiosk for Rutherford County residents.
The kiosk was secured for this central, downtown location at the initiative of Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland and Michael Hogan, Director of the Driver’s License Issuance Section at the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security. An added benefit of the kiosk being at the Linebaugh Library is that the library is open to the public for extended business hours and on weekends, Monday – Thursday 9am-9pm; Friday and Saturday 9am-5pm, and Sunday 1pm -6pm, with the exception of some holidays.
“As Mayor of Murfreesboro, I am pleased to join the Tennessee Department of Safety and Linebaugh Public Library in promoting the additional convenience of renewing and replacing a Tennessee driver license at one of the newest driver license self-service kiosk’s,” said Mayor Shane McFarland. “The downtown Murfreesboro kiosk will make it easier for library patrons, government workers, and the general public to renew their licenses at a convenient location with extended hours on weekdays and weekends.”
“The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security continues to expand services and convenience in order to reduce wait times at Driver Services Centers,” said State Senator Jim Tracy. “The kiosk at Linebaugh Public Library in Murfreesboro is one of more than 40 kiosk locations across Tennessee. I am excited to see the new kiosk installed in such a public location where citizens can park conveniently in the City parking garage and renew their license without waiting in line.”
The Linebaugh location is the second place in the city of Murfreesboro, besides the kiosks at the Driver Services Center, to allow Tennessee citizens to renew or replace an existing driver license or state identification card. The other kiosk is located in the MTSU ‘Blue Print’ Print Shop on campus. A third kiosk is located at the Rutherford County Clerk’s office in Smyrna.
Branch Librarian Carol Ghattas says: “It is an honor to be able to provide space for this service to our community. We have already had several people tell us how easy and quick it was to renew their license at the kiosk, and all without the wait they usually experience at the busy main Driver Service Center.”
Using the kiosk is easy. Following the touch screen instructions, the current license is scanned or information entered. The kiosk takes a photo and uses facial recognition software to verify the image on record. Payment is made with a credit or debit card, and an interim license prints out, which is valid for 20 days. The new secure license or ID card is mailed to the applicant’s home in 5-7 days.
