Fastball, an Austin-based rock n’ roll band which rose to popularity in the 90’s with their 1998 album All the Pain Money Can Buy, is headlining Concert 4 the Cure in Franklin on Sept 8. Concert 4 the Cure is an annual benefit concert taking place in the Franklin’s Westhaven community, helping to fund discovery grants at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.

Fastball was formed back in 1995 and consists of Miles Zuniga, vocalist/bassist Tony Scalzo, and drummer Joey Shuffield.

Fastball will be celebrating the 20th year of their milestone album All the Pain Money Can Buy with a remastered release in November and for the first time, it will be available on vinyl with bonus tracks and demos.

We spoke to Miles Zuniga who shared how the band has not only stayed together for over 20 years but also kept all three original members.

“We would take long breaks instead of breaking up and then you come back together. When you come back you realize how lucky you are to be a part of this group. It’s like being in a family. I feel really lucky, that we are still together.”

On one of those breaks in 2000, Zuniga found himself calling Nashville home as he pursued songwriting.

“I took my turn at the country music dream making machine and tried songwriting. I came to Nashville to try it out and after my first writing appointment, I got a cut for Phil Vassar. I thought this was way too easy but after that time I never got a cut again. I tried but I wasn’t cut out for that kind of songwriting but I met some amazing songwriters.”

Fastball has played several Nashville area venues over the years, performing at City Winery in 2017. The group returns to the area for Concert 4 the Cure Sept 8th. Zuniga jokingly says if the concert is outdoors it will probably rain as has been the case with most of the band’s summer concerts this year with the exception of residency weekends in Vegas at Harra’s.

But in terms of how their live music compares to their albums, Zuniga says you’ll hear lots of the same music but certainly the live shows offer more of their personality.

“We love rock n’ roll and there are a lot of nuances to our music that you may not notice unless you see us live. It’s a fun show. We will play several songs off the All The Pain Money Can Buy as well as Step into Light.”

And there’s new music on the horizon, says Zuniga, that fans can expect later this year.

Concert 4 the Cure begins at 5pm with music beginning at 5:30pm. The concert schedule includes local favorites Vic and the Spoils at 5:30 pm, Resurrection- A Journey Tribute Band at 6:45 pm and Fastball will take to the stage at 8:30 pm.

The event takes place Great Lawn at the Westhaven Resident’s Club, located at 401 Cheltenham Avenue, Franklin.
