The owner of Poke Fun (pronounced poke a), Jain Dong, became familiar with poke bowls after visiting the west coast. After falling in love with the Murfreesboro area while traveling between Kentucky and Georgia, he saw an opportunity to open his restaurant here. In September he opened his dream.
Poke is a healthy blend of sushi rice (aka sticky rice), fresh crunchy vegetables, raw diced fish, a sauce of your choice, and an additional topping, and sesame seeds to finish it off.
For those who do not like sushi rice, there are there other options, including brown rice, mixed greens, and nacho chips. And if fish is not your cup of tea, there is chicken and tofu.
The most popular dish is the “Build Your Own Bowl.” This allows the diner to customize their bowl to their likes. After choosing one of the four bases, up to eleven different vegetables and a choice of protein (tuna, salmon, crab, shrimp, yellowtail, octopus, chicken or tofu), you can choose one of their eight sauces, like House Ginger or Wasabi Mayo. Toppings include seaweed salad, pineapple, avocado, tempura flakes, roasted sesame, and mango. For those wishing a “Signature Bowl,” the top two are the Volcano Bowl and the Surfing Bowl.
The Volcano Bowl is much like its namesake sushi. The Surfing Bowl includes tuna salmon, avocado, sweet corn, mango, Yummy Sauce, wasabi mayo, ginger, wasabi, crispy garlic, roasted garlic, and Masago (a form of fish roe).
Poke fun also offers a crab or shrimp bowl on the Kids Menu, Mochi Ice Cream for dessert, as well as an assortment of beverages, including fountain and bottled drinks, real Hawaiian soft drinks, and imported Asian beverages including yogurt and milk based sodas, and traditional green and jasmine teas.
The food is well prepared, healthy, and very tasty. If you’ve ever been to Hawaii, it is very much like the street food you will find on all of the islands.
