Booking Officer Gary Patton was recognized for Deputy of the Month for May for the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center.

Patton received the award after he attempted to save a woman who was involved in a vehicle crash in May on South Church Street.

He was off-duty and driving when he heard the crash. He checked one of the victims for signs of life. She was not breathing. He began chest compressions and continued until relieved by another person.

Then, Patton helped a Murfreesboro Police officer who was providing first aid to another crash victim until Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services paramedics arrived.

He received the honor Tuesday on the 12th anniversary at the Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh presented Patton with a mug engraved with his name and a gift certificate paid for by supervisors. At left are Capt. Chris Fly and Deputy Chief Bernard Salandy.
