Oakland Patriots 11-0 (6-0)

TSSAA Round 2 in Rutherford County

Oakland knocked off Blackman by a 22-0 score in the first round of the TSSAA Class 6A playoffs on Friday night.

It was a rematch of Oakland’s 42-21 win from earlier this season.

After a scoreless first quarter, Patriot running back, Jeron Rooks found himself behind Blaze defenders for a 25 yard touchdown catch. Blackman jumped off-sides on the extra point. The penalty moved the Pats close enough to prompt coach Kevin Creasy to go for two, a try that was successful.

That 8-0 lead stood at half.

Rooks, struck again late in the third, taking a handoff around the right side and scooting for a 7-yard touchdown.

Between the freezing conditions and Oakland’s relentless defense, Blackman never could put the right combination of plays together to make any noise.

The Patriot win sets up yet another rematch for OHS, this time against the Cavaliers of Cookeville in Oakland next Friday.

Patriots coach Kevin Creasy:

On shutting out The Blaze offense.

“Our defense has played lights most of the year, but they’ve always given up one or two big plays. Tonight, we bent a few times, but were able to show up big on fourth down. I believe that was the difference in the ball game.”

On playing another familiar foe in Cookeville and the issues they present.

“It’s always tough playing somebody a second time. You never know what they’re going to give you. You don’t know if they’re going to try the same thing they did last time, are they going to change it up a little bit? It’s one of those deals where you have to focus on yourself more than you focus on anyone else. You have to get yourself better.”
