Oakland found itself in the TSSAA AAA playoffs for the first time since the 06-07 season, a decade long drought. They managed to reach the tournament by edging out perennially Region 4 kings, Blackman then defeating Walker Valley in the sectional. Their opponent, Southwind, who hail from the Tennessee basketball hot bed of Memphis.
During the first half of play Oakland went blow for blow, maintaining a narrow lead for the majority of the contest. The only issue, Southwind had yet to give their best shot, in what appeared to be the Jags playing down to their competition. With a shooting disparity in favor of Oakland, 55% to Southwind’s 44%, the Patriots held just a one point lead going into the half despite having the advantage in several statistical categories.
2nd Half
To start the third Oakland looked to capitalize on its first half advantages against Southwind, the Jags looked to play the game they were accustomed to. Only one of the team’s plans would come to fruition in the second.
Play in the third quarter resembled the first half, except the Jags were beggining to catch their second wind. Oakland had given it their all through three quarters and now found themselves with their tanks on empty. The score was tied at 37 heading into the fourth, but the Patriots would be stifled, only scoring three points in the ever important finale eight minutes.
The chalk would hold in this game as Southwind would take the game, 59 to 40. With Oakland’s departure from the tournament, there are now no Rutherford County teams left in any of TSSAA’s threes sections.
