The Netflix original movie “Bird Box”, starring Sandra Bullock, has been viewed by more than 45 million subscribers in the first seven days of its release, reported Marketwatch.

In a tweet Netflix stated, “Took off my blindfold this morning to discover that 45,037,125 Netflix accounts have already watched Bird Box — best first 7 days ever for a Netflix film!”

Based on Josh Malerman’s book of the same name, “Bird Box” centers on Malorie (Sandra Bullock), a woman who is struggling to survive with two children after a mysterious force kills off most of the world’s population. To protect themselves from this mysterious force, people wear blindfolds.

As the movie gained popularity, #birdboxchallenge went viral with fans posting videos and photos on social media where those in the video would be wearing blindfolds doing things like riding a scooter or climbing an escalator.

YouTube star, Morgan Adams posted a video called “24 Hour Bird Box Challenge” which has been viewed over 2 million times in just five days. Adams does have friends with her who are filming the challenge and able to steer her away from danger. Adams puts her blindfold on and sets out to get into a car where an unblindfolded friend drives them to a casino for a stay where once there, they attempt to play blackjack, navigate how to get to their room and once inside their room they remove the blindfolds. Wednesday, Netflix tweeted a warning, “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.”
