Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department is now accepting applications for the 14th Session of the Citizens Fire Academy.

The seven week course will begin Tuesday, September 6, and will continue through Tuesday, October 25, skipping October 4 due to the scheduled fall break of area schools. Class times are 6:00-9:00 pm.

The CFA offers a small group of area residents the opportunity to view and participate in the activities and services provided by the MFRD. Academy participants will receive an insider’s view of MFRD operations. Students will have the opportunity to participate in activities such as: wearing turnout gear, climbing a 65’ aerial, using extrication equipment, victim search and rescue using GPS, and much more (all activities are optional). Unique to this year’s class, a seventh week was added and will be utilized for students to become certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The academy will conclude with a graduation ceremony, where class members will receive a certificate of completion.

Tom Crawford, Class of 2015, had this to say about the CFA, “The Murfreesboro Fire and Rescue Citizens Academy is more professionally managed, more informative and more rewarding than I could have imagined. My entire class was pleasantly surprised as well. We were introduced to people, processes and equipment that we didn’t even know existed. If the idea behind the Academy was to educate the public, that goal has been met and then exceeded! We now know the inner workings of the department, and we know the quality of people working hard on our behalf. There is such a high caliber of men and women working at MFRD who take training seriously and keep their facilities in working order. For me, meeting you folks and being allowed a peek into the lives you live was worth every minute. Thank you so much for making this Academy possible.”

It is important to mention that the Citizens Fire Academy is in no way job related. Completing the academy has no bearing on employment with the City or MFRD.

The cost of the class is $35.00. Class size is limited, so be sure to apply as soon as possible! Deadline for application submission is August 29. Applications can be obtained at Fire Administration located at 220 NW Broad Street or any MFRD fire station. They can also be obtained online at: www.murfreesborotn.gov/fireacademy.
