Not so very long ago, it was hard to find healthy food options in Murfreesboro. Now, there are a growing number of restaurants offering tasty and healthy meals.
Munch (810 Medical Center Parkway, Murfreesboro), a recent entry into the healthy food restaurant category, offers protein bowls comprised of veggies, rice, and a choice of meat with an assortment of sauces that can be added. But they go one step further, they offer pre-prepared meals and bulk food that can be ordered for a week and picked up at a number of locations.
“My fiancé, Julia, and I, were both working two jobs, going to the gym every night, and spending every bit of free time we ever had cooking and preparing meals for the following day,” said founder Ian Mitzelfeld. “We realized there were a lot of people just like us! So, we decided to start our own meal prep business and it grew rapidly!”
While neither Ian nor Julia have any formal kitchen experience or culinary schooling, they had done a lot of healthy cooking for themselves, and been doing meal prep for friends for about 18 months before opening MUNCH in March.
In-store the menu is very basic, and they plan to keep it that way, but their meal prep and bulk foods menu is more extensive.
“We knew what foods went well together, and what foods fit into a person’s diet who’s trying to eat healthy,” added Mitzelfeld. “We just went with it! We are constantly switching up and adding things to the meal prep menu.”
Meal prep packs not only include their signature bowls, but also breakfasts, fajita bowls, and burrito bowls. Their bulk food option is great for any individual who has very specific requirements for their meals. When you purchase bulk food from MUNCH, it allows you to portion the food out yourself based on your needs.
Meal prep and bulk food can be picked up at their MUNCH location on Medical Center Parkway, or it can be picked up at Nutrition Factory.
“It is very simple to order,” said Mitzelfeld.“You go online, you add to your cart the meals you would like, and then you select a pickup location. You just go to the location on the date you selected and pick them up!”
From the start, their goal has been to provide a fast food alternative to anyone who wants fresh, quick, and affordable food. MUNCH is a great place to go to pick up a quick, healthy lunch or dinner. They hope to be able to franchise their concept in the future.
“It is a blessing to be able to open a restaurant in Murfreesboro,” said Mitzelfeld. “I went to school at Blackman [High School], graduating in 2014. I love this town, and I’m really glad I get to bring a healthy fast food option to the people. It’s the first of its kind, and I really think people are going to love it!”
