Middle Tennessee Head Volleyball Coach Dan Ahiers resigned his position, effective immediately, Director of Athletics Chris Massaro announced Tuesday.

Ahiers cited personal reasons, including his behavior after the prolonged illness and eventual death of his mother earlier this month, in his decision.

“I have discussed this matter at length with my family and, with the full support of my family, I have decided that a mutual parting of ways at this time is best for both me and the University,” he said.

“I will focus my time on healing and getting my family and life back in order after the very recent passing of my mother. I ask that you give me privacy while dealing with this difficult situation.

“I sincerely wish the University, the athletic department and the volleyball program the very best. I will be cheering loudly for their success.”

Ahiers (pronounced Airs) was the 10th head coach in MT history after being hired to the post on Jan. 7. He came to the Blue Raiders after registering a 56-15 record in two years at Carson-Newman University.

The Blue Raiders are currently 4-11 overall and 1-1 in C-USA play entering Friday’s home match against Rice.

“We accepted Coach Ahiers’ resignation today,” said Massaro. “It is an unfortunate situation but I honestly feel it is the best resolution. I wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”

Assistant Coach Jeff Huebner will serve as the interim head coach through the remainder of the season.
