Meet The New Firefighters At MFRD

Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department welcomed 10 new Firefighters this week.

Samuel Bennett, Joshua Byrd, Beau Doss, Matthew Henry, Dustin Holman, Dustin Hopper, Davis Sanders, Samuel Spear, Thomas Steele, and James Strader began their three-week orientation with MFRD on Monday, July 11.

“With 65-plus years combined experience in the fire service, these firefighters will be a great asset to our department,” said Fire Rescue Chief Mark Foulks.

Nine of the 10 were hired in anticipation of the opening of Fire Station 10 on Veterans Parkway July 31. Another vacancy became available after a retirement in the department.

“These gentleman are now a part of the MFRD family,” said Chief Foulks. “I look forward to working with them, and watching them progress in their careers.”

The new Firefighters will begin shift work at MFRD Headquarters located on Vine Street at the conclusion of orientation.

Meet the Firefighters

Samuel Bennett, Paramedic
3 years in the fire service
Married to Ginny
Enjoys spending time with his family and dogs, going to the gym, and woodworking.
Looks forward to: Being able to work with great people near his home.

Joshua Byrd, Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)
5 years in the fire service
Married to Gina with children Landon (7) and Adyson (4)
Enjoys spending time with family and friends and participating in outdoor activities.
Looks forward to: Helping the community, receiving training to better himself and the quality of service he will be able to provide, and experiencing the brother and sisterhood at MFRD.

Beau Doss, AEMT
7 years in the fire service
Married to Bea
Enjoys outdoor activities, working out, and studying fire service subject matter.
Looks forward to: Serving the citizens of Murfreesboro (where he was born and raised) and gaining as much knowledge and experience as he can to be the best Firefighter he can be!

Matthew Henry, Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
3.5 years in the fire service
Enjoys working out, fire service training, spending time with family and friends, and participating in outdoor activities.
Looks forward to: Learning as much as possible and advancing his career.

Dustin Holman, AEMT
6 years in the fire service
Married to Courtney with son Thatcher Brooks (2 weeks old)
Enjoys hunting, fishing, sports, and any hobby that involves spending time with his family.
Looks forward to: “After spending six years in the Marine Corps, I am looking most forward to the teamwork and making friends.”

Dustin Hopper, EMR
4 years in the fire service
Enjoys hunting, shooting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends.
Looks forward to: “Serving with an awesome group of highly motivated individuals, running a large amount of calls, and learning as much as I possibly can.”

Davis Sanders, EMR
9 years in the fire service
Daughter Kaitlin Sanders
Enjoys sports, weightlifting, fishing, camping, blacksmithing, Jiu Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts, and spending time with Kaitlin.
Looks forward to: “The experience of the department and staff, the training and call volume, the chance to put my training to good use, and most of all the culture and extended family.”

Samuel Spear, Paramedic
12 years in the fire service
Married to Angela with children Enoch, Elijah, and Eden
Enjoys music
Looks forward to: Serving the community with professionalism while developing new relationships with the fire department family.
He adds, “I appreciate the opportunity and look forward to serving my new community.” (Spear came to MFRD from Colorado!)

Thomas Steele, Paramedic
14 years in the fire service
Daughter Kallie
Enjoys mountain biking, motorcycles, SCUBA, and hiking.
Looks forward to: “The family concept of the agency with leadership that supports and builds up employees.”

James Strader, EMR
Approximately 2 years in the fire service
Married to Alex with son Deklan
Enjoys anything outdoor related, camping, riding, swimming, hunting, shooting, 4-wheeling, and sports.
Looks forward to: Serving the community which served him as a “youngster.” “I grew up in Murfreesboro and had many great opportunities. I appreciate the individuals that made that happen for me, and I’m excited that now, I will be in a role that will allow me to do this for others.”
He adds, “I love my God, my family, and my community and I look forward to serving with the ‘best of the best!’”
