Officers at the La Vergne Police Department are busy preparing for the annual National Night Out, which will be at Veterans Memorial Park on August 6th. From 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., neighbors throughout La Vergne and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on their front porch lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and law enforcement.
This year’s event is being coordinated by Sgt. Sheree Robertson. “It’s important for folks to get to know their local officers outside of emergency situations,” says Sgt. Robertson. “Police are people, too, and events like National Night Out allow us to have an active presence in our community in a friendly, positive atmosphere so that we can build stronger relationships.”
This year the La Vergne Police Department will be joined by the La Vergne Fire Department and Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office and their mounted patrol and distracted driving simulator. Other participants include Read to Succeed, American Legion, Rescue Squad, Box 100 and others. Local community organizations will also be at the park including the Miss La Vergne Beauty Pageant, Tennessee Strikers, local Boy Scouts and Girl Scout troops, Club Knock Out and others.
The non-profit organization held the first National Night Out in August of 1984. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes strong police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live and work. Together, we are making that happen.
National Night Out is celebrated by more than 38 million neighbors in 16,000 communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories and military bases across the world. Along with the traditional outside lights and front porch vigils, most communities celebrate National Night Out by hosting block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and other various community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and more.
