Homesense, a sister store of Home Goods, will be having a soft opening at The Avenue on April 29, with a full opening on May 1, 2025. Homesense is focused on furniture, lighting, rugs, art, and office furniture by global and top brands like CB2 at 30% to 50% off. A section called the “General Store” even carries things like bathtubs, peel and stick wallpaper, and tools like hammers and screwdrivers.

“Walking through its stores, you’ll see more floor space dedicated to [furniture], as well as living, dining and bedroom casegoods that the other doesn’t touch,” said an article in Business of Home. “Homesense’s stores average about 27,000 square feet (versus about 23,000 square feet for HomeGoods), making the brand a good fit for strip malls….”

Cosmopolitan magazine calls Homesense “the Disney World of home goods.”  Their prices are comparable to Home Goods, but to furnish a room fully one will need to visit both stores. Homesense does not carry things like bedding and towels, instead they focus on the larger pieces in a semi-showroom display which changes with the seasons. Like Home Goods, there are only a few pieces of each item, and what is on the floor one day may very well be gone tomorrow and there will be no others.

Their buyers are always looking for the hottest brand names and unique home fashion decor for every room in the home, buying from all kinds of vendors, including top brands, designers, and artisans from around the world. They also have some merchandise manufactured just for them.

Unlike traditional retailers, they don’t offer promotions, sales, coupons or other discounts. When something does go on sale, it is as clearance. They prefer focusing on everyday low prices.

One thing that Homesense does that Home Goods will not do is deliver. Also, they do not offer online shopping because their stock is always changing. You have to be willing to go into the store to get the deals. A visual 360% view of one of their stores is available here.

Their website is very minimalistic, but one thing it does offer is some “how to” tips that are useful, such as how to set a table, creating a gallery wall, and how to pick a rug. One interesting tip is that “the best seats in the house are one and a half to two and a half times your television screen’s diagonal measurement away.”

Last year, TJX Companies, Inc., Homesense’s parent, did about 35 percent of its overall $54 billion in revenue in home, including furnishings sold at the T.J. Maxx and Marshalls stores that have home departments, according to Business of Home. “The category grew nine percent in the HomeGoods/Homesense division last year, slightly outpacing the parent company’s overall growth for the 12-month period.”

Home Goods has been around since 1919 under a variety of names, with the formation of Homesense taking place in 2001 in Canada. The first Homesense was opened in the United States in 2017 in New York. It has been growing exponentially across the country ever since.
