Our friends at Three Dog Bakery in Franklin, Tn. offer these helpful solutions to helping your furry family member with their stomach problems naturally.

When your best buddy is suffering from an upset stomach or gastrointestinal issues, there are a variety of holistic remedies to help make your pup perky and playful again. After all, if it’s not bad enough watching your dog suffer, cleaning up doggie doo-doo in your house (especially on carpeting) can just add more angst to the situation.

4 Holistic Solutions for Upset Tummy’s

1. Pumpkin

“One of our favorite things to recommend for an upset stomach or digestive issues is pumpkin,” says Leslie Kessinger, co-owner of Three Dog Bakery in Franklin. “An unsalted, unsweetened can of pumpkin added to food can do the trick, as well as a product we carry in the store called Firm Up,” she advises. Kessinger says Firm Up is a dehydrated pumpkin product made by Diggin Your Dog that can be rehydrated whenever you need it so it’s convenient to keep on hand. “It’s particularly recommended for puppies that tend to have ‘puppy tummy’ — loose stool and upset stomach — frequently,” notes Kessinger.

2. Probiotics

If your best friend has routine digestive problems — like gas, flatulence, smelly and irregular stools — probiotics are also helpful. “They aid the body in breaking down food in the gut, and ensure the proper absorption of nutrients and disposal of waste,” explains Kessinger.

There are many ways to get probiotics into your dog’s diet. Two holistic products Kessinger recommends are Herbsmith Microflora and Ark Natural Gentle Digest, which have active strains of healthy bacteria for gut health. “Gentle Digest also comes in a convenient chew form for dogs who are pickier,” adds Kessinger.

3. Raw Goat’s Milk

Another favorite recommendation of Kessigner’s is raw goat’s milk. “Goat’s milk is nature’s super foods and contains more than 200 live strains of pre and probiotics in its natural raw state,” she explains. Kessinger says dogs love the taste of goat’s milk and it’s a great way to get digestive aids into your pup’s diet.

4. Ginger

“Ginger is a natural anti-nausea root that canDynamo Dog Treats settle the stomach,” says Kessinger. She recommends Cloud Star Dynamo Dog Functional Treats for Tummy, which contains pumpkin and ginger, for soothing a dog that is getting sick or experiencing loose stool.
