Once a month Game Galaxy offers a Fight Fantasy Gaming Tournament and Classic Pinball Tournament. The Fighting Game Tournaments include Street Fighter and Dragon Ball among others. They start at two in the afternoon and end about eight in the evening. The Pinball Tournament starts about an hour later. The cost to play is ten dollars per person, and it cost ten dollars to enter the tournament. There are cash prizes.
An entire room of classic pinball machines entices players to enter the tournament that started on January 12, and ends in March.
“The tournaments take place on the second Saturday of every month,” said Thomas Thurston, a gamer who is on staff. “Our owner, Jason Wilson, has been running video gaming tournaments for ten years.”
According to Thurston, Wilson began collecting arcade games for fun, eventually turning them into a business with Game Galaxy. The first location was in Hickory Hollow, which was moved to the current location on Lowery Street in Smyrna about a year and a half ago. There is another location in Goodlettsville at Rivergate Mall.
Currently, at the Smyrna location there are over 400 games on the floor, all part of Wilson’s collection. There are game consoles for everything from Classic Pac Man and Space Invaders, to xBox Halo. Besides arcade and pinball games, there are also console internet based games and virtual reality games. Some of these include Nintendo, Switch, and PlayStation VR. There are 10,000 games to play on the MAME machine.
“We also buy, sell, and trade games,” said Thurston, “and carry a full line of gaming equipment.”
When no tournaments are taking place, families can be found enjoying games together. Chris Mercado comes in once or twice a month with his sons, Luke and Jacob.
“Kids today are all about video games,” said Mercado, “I’m more of a sports guy myself, but I like to come with them and let them have a good time. We are only here for an hour today, but sometimes we stay two or three.”
The cost to play is seven dollars per hour per person, or ten dollars per person for unlimited play. There are no coins or tokens. They will also rent the space for private tournaments.
