Former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler is facing a civil lawsuit stemming from a car crash in Franklin, WSMV reports. Attorneys have filed the suit on behalf of Perry Lee, who was involved in the collision with Cutler on October 18, 2024.

According to the filing, Lee was driving along Bridge Street when his vehicle was struck from behind by Cutler’s Dodge Ram. The complaint alleges Cutler was following too closely, driving at an unsafe speed, and was impaired at the time of the crash. Court records show Cutler recently entered a plea agreement in his related DUI case. He was arrested the night of the crash and later admitted guilt to driving under the influence.

Franklin police reports from the incident described Cutler as visibly intoxicated. Officers wrote that he attempted to offer the other driver money to avoid police involvement. Investigators also said they discovered a rifle and loaded handgun inside his truck.

Prosecutors charged Cutler with DUI, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, failure to exercise due care, and violation of implied consent. As part of his plea deal, the weapons charge was dismissed. He agreed to surrender his pistol, serve four days in the Williamson County Jail beginning September 29, and complete a year of unsupervised probation. He must also attend a DUI safety course, pay a $350 fine, and his driver’s license has been revoked.

Attorneys said Lee, a veteran, continues to suffer lasting injuries from the crash and is seeking damages to cover medical needs and quality-of-life impacts.

Cutler attended Vanderbilt University from 2001 to 2005 and was selected in the first round, 11th overall, of the 2006 NFL Draft. His NFL career included stints with the Denver Broncos (2006–2008), Chicago Bears (2009–2016), and Miami Dolphins (2017).
