On Tuesday night, firefighters rescued an unconscious man who fell asleep while cooking.
A neighbor called 911 after hearing smoke alarms and getting no response at an apartment on Warrior Dr.
Crews from Laddder 2 arrived to find heavy smoke coming from inside. Firefighters forced entry, rescued an unconscious man from the couch, and safely removed burning food. They also saved his 8-week-old puppy hiding under the couch. The man was treated by EMS, and the apartment was ventilated. No other injuries were reported.
MFRD strongly urges everyone to remember:
* Stay in the kitchen while you cook. Cooking fires happen too often to walk away, even for a few minutes.
* Use a lid to smother small grease fires if safe to do so. Never throw water on a grease fire—it can spread the fire and cause burns.
* Never leave a pan on the stove unattended.
* Do not cook while tired or drowsy.
* Test your smoke alarms today—working smoke alarms save lives!
