Students Learn Modern Fire Safety Tips

Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department and the Tennessee Firemen’s Association partnered to offer a 6.5 hour “Engine Company Operations: First 5 Minutes to Success” course in Murfreesboro on February 27.

The course took place at the Franklin Heights Apartment Complex and consisted of:

• New Modern Residential Fire Strategy and Tactics for the Initial Company Officer (and the S.L.I.C.E.R.S. Acronym)

• Pump Operations and Firefighting During the First 5 Minutes on the Fire Ground
Students had the opportunity to fill every role (from Firefighter to Captain) on the fire ground to complete both knowledge and skills activities.

Instructors were: MFRD Captain/Shift Training Officers Terry Smith, Mike Keith, and Tracy Summar, Assistant Fire Marshal Michael Bartlett, Captain/Shift Inspector Jeff Day, Captain David Sloan, and Firefighter Rob Odom. Also assisting were Training Officer Dale Brandon from Manchester Fire Department and Lieutenant Chris Reed from Bedford County Fire Department.
Participants were from different areas of Tennessee (from Watertown and Manchester to Alexandria, etc.) They were as follows:
John Partridge, Chris Tubbs, Daniel Haun, Lorrie Merriman, Justin Avera, Alan Balko, Stephen Wooten, Jesse Morris, Mark Reed, Keith Henderson, Sammy Morton, Michael Robison, Ben Sproul, Robert Russell, Shannon Meyers, Benjamin Jackel, Dave Orman, Brandon Young, Matt McBride, Cody Wilson, Daniel Webb, and Wayne Sutter (MFRD).

“This was a great group of students,” said Lead Instructor Terry Smith. “It is our hope that each student will take the skills and knowledge learned back to their respective departments and put them into action.”
