A group of cub scouts got to come before the Board of Mayor and Alderman at a special meeting to ask questions and learn more about their City’s governing body.
The three Cub Scouts are part of Webelos Den 340 in La Vergne. This meeting helped the den complete the Arrow of Light required adventure Building a Better World.
First, the Cub Scouts approached the podium individually for citizen comments, each boy discussed things they liked about the city as well as a concern they had for the city, including planting more trees, putting recycling bins in La Vergne’s park, fighting bullying as well as keeping water bills from going up.
“We love doing things like this for our local Scouts. It gives them a chance to see how their government works and how they can be more involved as they continue to grow and mature,” said Mayor Jason Cole.
Then the scouts were allowed to approach the podium again to ask the board questions such as “why did you want to run for the offices of mayor and alderman,” “what would you do with a million-dollar grant that you could use however you want,” and “if you could change one thing in the zoning code what would it be, and why?”
Vice-Mayor Matt Church commended the boys during the meeting, saying “there was a time … when an individual wasn’t allowed to address their governing body in our country, and many people have sacrificed for that through many wars to allow individuals like yourself … to come and address their governing body.” He went on to say “you are speaking for more than yourself. You’re speaking for thousands of people in our city and that is very honorable. I’m very proud of you.”
The Cub Scout Webelos will earn the Arrow of Light rank on January 28th, which is the highest rank Cub Scouts can earn and is similar to the Eagle Scout honor in Boy Scouts. This is also the only Cub Scout badge that can be worn on the Boy Scout uniform when a boy graduates into a troop. Following the ceremony, the Webelos will be crossed over to the Boy Scouts ranks. Another group of Webelos will request to go before the Board of Mayor and Aldermen next year to complete the same required adventure.
