Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department responded to a residential fire call on Alexander Blvd. today. Crews entered the home and located an active fire in the master bedroom.
They quickly extinguished the fire. The preliminary cause of the fire may have been a space heater plugged into a surge protector sparking, igniting nearby curtains.
“As winter weather starts, MFRD warns citizens about deadly hazards from home heating equipment, including space heaters, furnaces, and fireplaces. Portable heaters can cause fires if placed too close to combustible materials, such as drapes, furniture, or bedding, so make sure to place them at least three feet away from these materials. Always plug electric space heaters directly into a wall outlet and never into an extension cord or power strip, to prevent overloading and causing a fire. Never leave portable heaters on while sleeping,” MFRD stated.
Two people were home when the fire started. They were evacuated, and EMS personnel evaluated them. No injuries were reported.
