County Mayor Names Interim Sheriff


While Sheriff Arnold remains in custody of the federal authorities, Rutherford County Mayor Ernest Burgess announced within minutes of the incarceration an interim County Sheriff.

Randy Garrett Named Interim Sheriff (bio from

2-randygarrettChief Deputy Randy Garrett joined the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office in September 2010 after retiring as Deputy Chief of the Murfreesboro Police Department.

As chief deputy, Garrett has supervisory authority over detention, warrants, communications and all law enforcement divisions of the Sheriff’s Office and commands all operations in the sheriff’s absence.

“Our staff and employees are dedicated in providing professional and courteous service to the citizens of Rutherford County. We strive each day to improve operations of the Sheriff’s Office in making Rutherford County the safest county in Tennessee.”

He started his law enforcement career at Watertown Police Department. He joined Murfreesboro Police July 1, 1976 as a patrol officer. He worked his way up the ranks in the Uniformed Patrol Division until becoming deputy chief of police in 2003.

Garrett earned the Officer of the Year Award in 1982. He is a graduate of the 191st session of the FBI National Academy and a member of the FBI National Academy Associates. He is a 2008 graduate of Leadership Rutherford.
