Wilson Central Wildcats (6A) at Franklin Rebels (6A)

Thursday at 7:00 pm, Region 3-6A

Wilson Central (6-1, 3-1) set a school record for points scored in a game in a 62-26 beat down at Lebanon.  Quarterback Blake Meadors went 9-10 for 224 yards and three touchdowns through the air, and Tyler Bowes rushed for 117 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns.  Meadors favorite target was Colton Dowell who added 133 yards receiving on three receptions and two touchdowns.  Wilson Central will look to get multiple play-makers the ball out of various Spread formations and line up in a 3-4 on defense.

3 Keys for Wilson Central
1. Limit the Rebels ability to effectively run the football; force the Rebels to convert 3rd & long situations
2. Feature your athletes in space; put pressure on the Rebel defense to make plays on an island
3. Avoid three & outs on offense; do not allow Franklin to dictate the pace of the game

Franklin (5-1, 3-0)
jumped out to a 38-0 lead by halftime and pummeled Antioch 45-7.  Mitch Rossi led the Rebel attack with 136 yards rushing on 16 carries and three touchdowns.  Quarterback Carter Hendry added 77 yards on the ground and 45 yards through the air to go along with two rushing touchdowns.  The Rebels run a multiple 4-3 defense with two high safeties and a physical Spread option offense.

3 Keys for Franklin
1. Tackle well in space against speedy play-makers
2. Stay ahead of the chains on offense & convert 3rd downs; control time of possession
3. Protect the football & avoid costly turnovers

“Coach Speak”
 Forecast:
Franklin has had this game circled on their calendar for nearly a year after Wilson Central upset the Rebels 21-20 in the 2nd Round of the 2015 playoffs.  A Franklin victory could set up a region championship showdown with Mt. Juliet in two weeks; however a Wilson Central victory could potentially force a three-way tie atop the Region 3-6A standings and force a tiebreaker to go into effect.  Wilson Central has to avoid three and outs on offense, attack the Rebel secondary deep, and control the Rebels rushing attack to pull out the victory.  Franklin needs to win on 1st & 2nd down, while converting 3rd downs to control time of possession.  The Rebels also need to limit the Wildcats big play ability on offense and avoid early, costly turnovers that have plagued them in multiple games this year.  Watch for Franklin’s physical offensive line, bone-crushing running back, and opportunistic defense to take over this game from the start and lead the Rebels to victory Thursday night!

Prediction: Franklin 28, Wilson Central 21

Brentwood Academy Eagles (DII-AA) at MBA Big Red (DII-AA)

Friday at 7:00 pm, East/Middle Region, MyTV30 – WUXP’s Friday Night Rivals Game of the Week

Brentwood Academy (5-1, 3-0) rallied from a 14-7 1st half deficit to defeat Ensworth 35-21.  The Eagles special teams proved to be “special” blocking two Ensworth punts in the 3rd quarter, one of which was returned for a touchdown.  Quarterback Jeremiah Oatsvall completed 13-19 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns, while also adding 56 yards on the ground with a touchdown.  Tomario Pleasant rushed for 101 yards on 13 carries, and Daniel Taylor added 84 yards receiving and a touchdown.  The Eagles game is to have a balanced attack out of their Spread offense and play a disruptive 3-4 defense.

3 Keys for Brentwood Academy
1. Do not kick the ball anywhere near Ty Chandler on special teams
2. Force MBA to tackle play-makers in space; stretch the defense vertically
3. Eliminate long touchdown runs from Ty Chandler; hold MBA to Field Goals in the Red Zone

Montgomery Bell Academy (6-1, 3-0)
scored 28 points in the 2nd half to win on the road at JPII 49-27.  The Big Red defense was led by nose guard Ryan Kosson (5 tackles, 2 sacks) and safety Harrison Graves (7 tackles, 1 interception).  Running back Ty Chandler rushed for 203 yards on 20 carries with four touchdowns, while wide receiver Montgomery Owen added 111 yards receiving on three catches and two touchdowns.  MBA will feature a heavy dose of Ty Chandler out of their Multiple I offense and line up in a 4-2-5 on defense.

3 Keys for Montgomery Bell Academy
1. Establish Ty Chandler early & often; force the BA defense to stay honest with timely play-action passes
2. Tackle well in space & rally to the football
3. Make a big play on special teams & win the turnover battle

“Coach Speak”
 Forecast:
This is a rematch that we have all been waiting for after Brentwood Academy won the 2015 DII-AA State Championship in dramatic fashion 56-55 in double overtime!  The Eagles return several high-level skill players from a year ago and have added play-makers Daniel Taylor and Mario Pleasant to the mix.  The Big Red return the most dangerous player on the field in Ty Chandler, who was unstoppable in last year’s State Championship contest.  MBA must dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, force BA to convert 3rd & long all night, and get Ty Chandler 30+ touches in a variety of ways to pull off the upset.  BA needs to learn from past mistakes and not kick the ball anywhere near Mr. Chandler, establish the running game, and put pressure on the MBA defense by featuring their athletes in space.  Hold your water and skip the bathroom breaks Friday night because this game could become a high scoring affair with quick strike fireworks all evening.  Brentwood Academy takes a commanding lead in the Region standings behind big time players making big time plays in big time games!

Prediction: Brentwood Academy 38, Montgomery Bell Academy 35

Goodpasture Christian Cougars (3A) at Stratford Spartans (3A)

Friday at 7:00 pm, Region 5-3A

Goodpasture (5-1, 2-0) should be well rested and prepared coming off a bye week.  The Cougars defeated long-time rivals Lipscomb Academy two weeks ago 6-0.  Kody Crider caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Brooks in the third quarter that proved to be the difference in the game.  Goodpasture will show multiple formations out of the Spread on offense and use a 3-4 defense to blitz from everywhere on the field.

3 Keys for Goodpasture
1. Do not allow TJ Carter to beat you on special teams
2. Force the Spartans into 3rd & long situations & pressure the QB
3. Convert 3rd downs on offense & keep the chains moving against an elite defense

Stratford (7-0, 3-0)
ended Christ Presbyterian Academy’s region strangle hold, by handing the Lions their first region loss since 2011; 7-6 in a defensive slugfest.  Josh Trueheart led the Spartans completing 15-28 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown pass to Memphis commit TJ Carter.  Stratford plays an aggressive 3-4 defense and will show a variety of formations from their pro-style offense.

3 Keys for Stratford
1. Eliminate penalties that plagued them against CPA
2. Establish TJ Carter early on offense
3. Win the battle up front on both sides of the ball

“Coach Speak” Forecast:
Stratford and Goodpasture both come into this game riding winning streaks and program resurgence.  Stratford is looking to take a commanding lead in the Region standings towards a #1 seed in the playoffs.  Goodpasture is staring at a stretch run that could put them atop of the Region standings or drop them completely out of the playoffs.  Goodpasture has to dominate the line of scrimmage, tackle well in space, and create a big play on special teams in order to pull the upset.  Stratford needs to correct mistakes and penalties from last week, win the turnover battle, and establish TJ Carter offensively.  I believe Stratford got a wakeup call last week against CPA and went back to work on the basics and fundamentals.  Look for the Spartans to get TJ Carter the ball in a variety of ways on offense and for the Spartans elite defense to flex its muscles Friday night!

Prediction: Stratford 27, Goodpasture 13
