Middle Tennessee faces a tough early season test Tuesday as former Ohio Valley Conference foe Murray State comes to the Murphy Center for a 6:35 p.m. tip with the Blue Raiders.

Both teams enter the contest having won their season openers, with Murray State narrowly escaping Illinois State at home, 73-70, with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer.

“Murray State started off the year with a really good win against Illinois State, a very good Missouri Valley Conference team,” Head Coach Kermit Davis said. “They have excellent guards in transition and they’re new junior college forward [Terrell Miller] looks just like a duplicate of [former Blue Raider] Darnell Harris.

“He can shoot balls and stretches defenses at the five or the four. This is going to be another really good Murray team.”

Middle Tennessee rolled to a 102-64 win against Milligan on Friday with six players in double digits, three of which were making their Blue Raider debuts.

Seniors Reggie Upshaw and JaCorey Williams led the way with 21 points apiece with Upshaw notching his 15th career double-double on a career-high tying 13 rebounds.

Terrell Miller poured in 23 for the Racers against Illinois State, knocking down 5-of-10 attempts from three. Jonathan Stark added 19 points, including the game winner, while Murray State got 14 from Bryce Jones and 12 from Damarcus Croaker.

Middle trails the all-time series against the Racers by a tally of 103-35, but holds a 16-14 edge in the last 30 meetings played in the Murphy Center.

Upshaw (16 points, eight rebounds) and Giddy Potts (15 points) led the Raiders last season in a 65-76 loss in Murray, Ky.
