October 23, 2024 – The Murfreesboro Police Department Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) is trying to determine if excessive speed was a contributing factor in a crash where a 14-year-old died, and three people were injured.
The fatal crash happened at the intersection of Veterans Parkway and Kingdom Dr. at 11:04 on Tuesday morning, Oct. 22.
A 14-year-old front seat passenger in an Audi A4 sedan died at the scene. The 16-year-old driver, and another 14-year-old back seat passenger were taken to Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital (ASTRH). They were later taken to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville for further medical care. The 47-year-old driver of an Acura MDX utility vehicle was also taken to ASTRH. All three are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The teens are Blackman High School students and were returning to school after attending a state volleyball tournament at Rockvale High School.
FACT Team Commander Lt. Zachary Ferrell said the preliminary findings suggest a 47-year-old driver attempted to turn left onto Veterans Parkway into the path of the car driven by the 16-year-old. The vehicles collided and spun several times before stopping. The car and SUV sustained significant damage.
“We urge all drivers, teens and adults, to understand that every decision made while driving can have life-altering consequences,” Ferrell said. “Responsible driving behaviors can prevent future tragedies on our roadways.”
FACT investigators are conducting a thorough investigation as to the cause of the crash including vehicle speeds, and other contributing factors. The crash remains under investigation.
