Riverdale’s baseball team remained unbeaten, edging Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett, 8-7, Thursday in nine innings in the Warriors’ opening game of the Grand Slam Tournament in Smyrna.

The victory lifted the Warriors to 4-0 on the season. The game was Dobyns-Bennett’s first of the year. The Warriors are scheduled to play Johnson City Science Hill on Friday in the tournament.

Science Hill shut out the Oakland Patriots, 9-0, Thursday in the tournament.

In other action from Thursday, defending Class AAA state champion Siegel was knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten in the same tournament, falling 5-4 to Beech, despite a pair of hits each from C.J. Murray and Drew Benefield for the Stars.

While the Buccaneers were able to edge the Stars, Beech did not fare nearly as well against Murfreesboro Central Magnet in the tournament. The Tigers posted a 7-1 victory in the season opener for Central Magnet. Joey Hughes homered for Central Magnet in the victory and C.J. Campbell collected three hits for the Tigers.

Blackman completed its three-game series with Stewarts Creek, routing the Red Hawks 10-1 on Thursday. D.J. Wright threw a six-hitter for Blackman in the victory. The win gave the Blaze the series, as Blackman’s offense scored 18 runs in the final two games after being shut out in the opener. Connor Williamson and Derick Junker had two hits apiece for the Blaze on Thursday.

Elsewhere in Rutherford County action, the Eagleville Eagles posted their second straight shutout against Fayetteville, winning 11-0 on Thursday after also shutting out the Tigers, 3-0, on Wednesday.

Middle Tennessee Christian pounded Moore County 20-4 to sweep a two-game series against the Raiders. Zach Stephens had two hits and four RBIs and also got the win on the mound for the Cougars.

  1. Why is Lavernge HS is hardly if ever mentioned in scores or just about anything they are in Rutherford County to .

    • We have just began scoring this year..During football season we covered La Vergne. Part of the problem is we are a small staff, and if they don’t report scores to us, it makes it harder to find for baseball, etc. We will try and do a better job.
