Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital has completed a $17 million expansion of its maternity unit, adding new space and resources to support growing demand for women’s and infant care across Middle Tennessee.
The 12,500-square-foot expansion includes 13 new postpartum suites and a 10-bassinet satellite well-baby nursery, creating additional room for families while enhancing comfort, privacy and access to care.
Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford welcomed more than 3,300 babies last year, as Rutherford County continues to experience rapid growth. The hospital said the expansion will help meet the increasing need for maternity services in the region.
“From the design of the patient rooms to the addition of new postpartum and nursery space, every aspect of this expansion was created with families in mind,” said Daphne David, president and CEO of Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital.
The project was made possible in part by a $6 million donation from The Christy-Houston Foundation, Inc., along with $500,000 raised through the Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Foundation.
The maternity expansion follows the hospital’s 2024 improvements to the Lee and Susan Moss Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which added family sleep rooms, updated waiting areas and a redesigned entrance.
Officials say the expanded unit will strengthen maternity care options for families, from routine deliveries to high-risk pregnancies, while continuing to provide specialized support throughout pregnancy, childbirth and recovery.
