Middle Tennessee senior defensive back Jeremy Cutrer has been named to the Jim Thorpe Award 2016 Preseason Watch List, announced by the Jim Thorpe Award Committee today.

Cutrer, a native of New Orleans, is one of 39 players on the list which recognizes the top defensive backs in the nation. Players from 10 different conferences complete this year’s initial watch list.

Cutrer was voted second-team All Conference- USA in 2015. He played in 10 games and earned nine starts while finishing the season with 31 tackles. He finished with three interceptions and a team-high 13 pass break-ups.

The heralded special teams standout also had two blocked kicks which ranked seventh nationally. He was 20th nationally in passes defended with 1.3 per game.

The Jim Thorpe Award is one of the most coveted awards in college football. The award was established in 1986 and is named after history’s greatest all-around athlete, Jim Thorpe. Thorpe excelled not only as a running back, passer, and kicker on the offensive side of the ball; but also stood out as a defensive back. In addition to his legendary performance on the football field, Thorpe played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon.

The Jim Thorpe Award watch list is chosen by a screening committee who compiles a list of 30-50 players.

Also placed on National Watchlists:
