Community residents will remember victims who died in the 9/11 terrorists’ attacks during a solemn ceremony at 9 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 11 at the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, said Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh.
Veterans, first responders and residents are invited to attend the 17th annual event at the 9/11 Memorial at the Sheriff’s Office at 940 New Salem Highway in Murfreesboro.
“Our annual ceremony reflects the memory of heroic first responders and citizens who died that day,” Fitzhugh said. “The ceremony also honors the military who fight terrorism throughout the world.”
Almost 3,000 emergency workers and civilians died Sept. 11, 2001 when the terrorists crashed planes into the Twin Towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. The crew and passengers on Flight 93 diverted a fourth plane from striking Washington by crashing into a field in Shanksville, Pa.
Keynote speaker will be U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Chaplain Clark Harrell, who has earned the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal and Commendation Medal and the Army Commander’s Award for Public Service. In his civilian life, he is principal at Stewarts Creek High School.
The event will include a combined Honor Guard from law enforcement, firefighters and paramedics, posting of the POW flag by Rolling Thunder and a bell ringing by Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department.
