Traveling with your pet can be stressful for them and difficult for you, especially if your pet is a nervous traveler or simply not used to it. In the past, pet travel products were limited; however, more recently manufacturers and pet lovers have created products that make pet parents’ lives easier. If you’re traveling for the holidays, consider these great pet travel products before you head out on your holiday adventures.

Anti-Anxiety Treats

If you have a pet who gets anxious when it’s time to travel, there are a few anti-anxiety treats you can pick up to help your pup relax. Try the Ark Naturals Happy Traveler chews or Composure treats.

“Either are great alternatives to prescription sedatives because they help relax the dog without completely knocking the dog out.” says Leslie Kessinger, co-owner of Three Dog Bakery in Franklin and Mt Juliet. The Happy Traveler treats are longer lasting but take 45-60 mins to kick in; whereas Composure acts faster (more like 20-30 mins) but only lasts for about 3 hours, adds Kessinger.

Pet Safety Kit

American Kennel Club First Aid Dog Kit

Just like you would have a first aid kit to take care of you and your family, having a first aid kit for your pet is essential. While you can certainly assemble your own using this helpful list from the humane society, there are many pre-assembled first aid kits available as well. This one from the American Kennel Club includes 40 essential pieces to take care of your pet should they get hurt. It includes:

1 travel bag with handle
1 CPR mask for people
1 brush-comb
1 tick tweezer
1 pair of vinyl gloves that are latex and powder free
4 alcohol pads
1 roll of adhesive tape
3 rolls of non adhesive dressing
2 sting relief pads
2 non-woven wound pads
2 antiseptic cleansing wipes
1 non adhesive pad
1 ice pack
1 emergency blanket
1 oral syringe
1 rubber tourniquet
1 wood tongue compressor
10 cotton tipped applicators
1 hand sanitizer
1 saline eye wash
1 3% hydrogen peroxide
1 styptic pencil

Interactive Toy or Chew

West Paw Hurley Chew Toy

If you’ve got a long road trip ahead of you, consider picking up an interactive toy or chew that will keep your pup busy. Kessinger recommends a benebone, because it is a durable chew that the dog won’t eat, just chew on, so it is safe for chewing in the car. She suggests West Paw Hurley chew bone or a Tux toy filled with frozen peanut butter (with the car seat covered in a Ruffwear seat cover) to keep your pup happy and busy!

Seat Protector

Ruffwear Seat ProtectorA seat protector is a must have for long road trips. The Ruffwear Seat Cover has everything a pet owner needs. It is durable and waterproof, protecting your car from the remnants of dog adventures. The Ruffwear Seat Cover can be installed in a traditional or hammock configuration and maintains access to seatbelts. Secure attachments keep the cover in place, and non-slip fabric keeps dogs stable during the ride. It is easy to fit and remove, cleans with a shake and is machine washable.
